           Decision

           Matterof- Frank S. Nagy

           File: B-237358
           Date: February 12, 1990

           DECISION

This decision concerns the claim of an employee for reim-
bursement of rental car costs incurred when his privately
own vehicle broke down while driving from his temporary duty
station to his official duty station.l/

During an extended period of temporary duty in Chattanooga,
Tennessee, Mr. Frank S. Nagy chose to return to his home at
the close of business on Friday, May 20, 1988, for the
weekend rather than remain in Chattanooga. His privately
owned vehicle broke down during the trip home. As a result,
he secured a rental vehicle, completed his weekend travel,
and returned to Chattanooga on Monday, May 23, 1988, to
complete his temporary duty assignment. The question
relates to reimbursement for various car rental expenses
incurred by him for the period May 20-22, 1988.

Under the provisions of paragraph 1-7.5c of the Federal
Travel Regulations, and its successor provision, paragraph
i-7.llb(4),2/ an employee in a travel status may voluntarily
return to his official station or place of abode for
nonworkdays and be reimbursed for the cost of the round-trip
travel and per diem, regardless of mode of travel, not to
exceed the cost of per diem and travel expenses that would
have been incurred had the employee remained at the tempo-
rary duty station. See Hugo H. Huslia, 64 Comp. Gen. 236
           (1985); Thomas Anderson, B-200601, July 31, 1981; Gene
           Daly, B-197386, June 15, 1983; John D. Rotz, B-186266,

           Office, General Accounting Office.
