Obviously, great effort must continue to be concentrated on improving the state-of-the-art of applying computers to the civil engineering field. GAO has developed a deep appreciation of the contribution that engineers make in terms of increasing not only the quantity of goods and services we produce, but also the quality of the lives we lead. The challenges of coping with the energy crisis, controlling inflation, accelerating the rate of technological innovation, and improving our productivity impose particularly heavy demands on the analytical tools and the problem-solving capabilities of the Nation's engineers.
