Status Of Major Acquisitions As Of

September 30, 1982

As of September 30, 1982, federal agencies
estimated cost of 444 civil and defense
major acquisitions was more than $842
billion. This included cost growth of more
than $460 billion over the initial estimates
for these acquisitions, The initial estimate is
the estimate contained in the budget
justification on which the Congress bases
its original funding of an acquisition.

Quantity increase and inflation were tn
major reasons for cost growth in thd-
Department of Defense acquisitions. Infla-
tion was the major reason for cost growth in
civil acquisitions.

In addition to providing total cost growth
information, this report provides information
on the number of individual acquisitions
that, when compared to initial estimates,
experienced schedule slippages, quantity
variances, and unit cost increases.
