Better Use Of Information Technology

Can Reduce The Burden Of -Federal Paperwork

The Federal Government has made signif-
icant progress in reducing the public's
information reporting burden by simplifying
and eliminating forms and by other means.
Little is being done by OMB and Federal
agencies, however, to use information
technology to further reduce business and
Government paperwork burden and reduce
associated costs.

There are over 3,300 information reporting
requirements levied on businesses by the
Federal Government. GAO performed case
studies of four of these. In each case, GAO
found that submission of the required data
through automated means such as magnetic
tape, disk, or telecommunications would
significantly reduce paperwork burden and
improve the efficiency of the data collection
operations. Strong leadership by the Office
of Management and Budget and increased
emphasis by Federal managers are needed
to capitalize on the potential benefits of
using information technology in Federal
data collection activities.
