Department Of Agriculture Could Do More

To Help Farmers Conserve Energy

Important areas in which farmers can achieve
near-term energy savings are irrigation im-
provements, conservation tillage, and re-
duced fertilizer application.
However, some farmers are not adopting
energ y conservation practices because they
are eluctant to change from traditional
meth ds, believing such change involves
an economic risk.

The C epartment of Agriculture (USDA) could
help overcome this barrier by providing
farmers more specific information which
could assure them of the cost effectiveness
of su~ gested measures. USDA's new Office
of Er ergy could be the focal point.

The Department of Energy is completing
several energy-related agricultural projects.
GAO recommends that management of
thes; projects be transferred to USDA.
