Qualifying For Federal Funding Of Tribally

Controlled Community Colleges

For tribally controlled community colleges
to qualify for Federal assistance, the Bureau
:)f Indian Affairs must verify the number of
full-time equivalent Indian students claimed
.y the colleges. GAO found discrepancies in
tudent counts in 10 of 11 of the community
:olleges it reviewed for academic year 1980-
31. The colleges were not requiring proof
rhat all students were eligible Indians, were
lot maintaining up-to-date enrollment data,
ind were making counting errors.

0lthough college officials strongly favor the
Fribally Controlled Community College As-
;istance Act of 1978 and want it reauthor-
zed, they expressed concern about the way
:he Bureau of Indian Affairs implements the
act. Bureau officials are now taking steps to
esolve these concerns.

3AO made this review at the request of the
3ubcommittee on the Department of the In-
:erior and Related Agencies, Senate Com-
nittee on Appropriations.
