RELEASED --Plans for allocating and contolling re- sources are poor. --Expenditures are not controlled. --Property is not safeguarded. At two institutions, GAO identified $1.4 million worth of unneeded repair and con- struction projects which were subsequently cancelled. At five institutions GAO identi- fied over $216,000 worth of unnecessary purchases and over $500,000 worth of un- controlled property. The Department of Justice internal audit staff should report to the Attorney General on the Bureau of Prisons' progress in implementing its policies for planning and controlling the acquisition and use of personnel and property.
