The Honorable Plark 0. atf ield
Ranking Minority Member, Committee
  on Enerqy and Natural Resources
lnD.i ed States Senate

Subject.:011 and Gas Potential in the Arctic National
               Wildlife Rangj (ED-80-56)

In a December 20, 1979, letter, you asked us to
provide our op inion on whether the data in Petroleum
Source Rock and VReservoir 0ual ity Data from Outcrop Samples
Onshore North Slope Fast of Prudhoe Bay (United States
Goolog c!d]a Survey (USG( ) open f ile #79-l6 34) support-s many
a.-rnalysts' contentions that the rocks of the Arctic National)
Wildl ife Range have a potent ial for producing oil and gas.

frn that report, the State of Alaska and USGS compiled
and published the results of laboratory analyses providing
geochemical, physical, palynological and paleontological data
on 74 to P1 surface rock samples collected between Prudhoe Bay
and the Canadian border. This data was provided in an unin-
ferpreted format in order that they be made available to the
puh ic pr or to the veaufort Sea Sale. The authors id n noth
interpret the data or draw any conclus ion from it. Therefore,
the- report had no (',onci us ion concerning the Range's potenti~al
to produce oil or Jas. The roport presents raw data for other
to eval uate and Interpret.

In our oplinlon, the data supports a position that- the
potnt alfor oil. and qas definutely exists in the Range.
Tbhis pofl e.nf ial , however, should not be construed t-o mean that,
reservo irs ex ist , that they will. be found, or that,' they will
be large enough to he economically produced. The existence of
larqe oil or qas resources can only be confirmed by drilling., '
