Water SupplV For Urban Areas:

Problems In Meeting Future Demand

The Nation's cities face serious water pro-
blems. Use in some areas already approaches
or exceeds the dependable supply, and de-
mand in urban areas is increasing. These areas
must cope with shortages, ground water de-
pletion, inadequate distribution systems, and
water quality problems. Environmental oppo-
sition and the lack of funding may make it
difficult to take the actions needed to assure
an adequate supply.

No simple solutionslexist. Desalination of salt-
water and wastewater reuse are feasible but
have not been adopted on a broad scale. Con-
servation and reducing demand will lessen,
but not eliminate, the need fbr developing
new sources of supply. -
