    Dear Mr. Aspin:

       Fol] owing your request of June 26, 1974, we agreed to provide
    you with info-mnation on expcnditures for air travel by AMTRtAK
    personnel in 1.973 and part of 1974 and to classify such travel as
    being

       --between cities on the AMTIRAK system, other than the
         Northea.,., orridor;

       --al.ong the Northeast corridor bctween Washington, D.C.,
         and ,oston, Massachusetts; or

       --to or from cities not on the AMTRAK system.

    As agreed w it1) your office, the inforimtion developed includes the
    cost of airtine tickets for which A I\IA [K was billed by the airlines
    but not the co.t,, of Lickets purLIIClased by empIoyees for which AMT1-AK
    reimbuised tliem directly. According to an AUITRAK official, ticket
    purchases billed through the airlines account for approximately 95
    percent of AIITRAII-'s total air travel cost.
