         Previous GAO reports or health care for veterans dealt
wi~h V-t'-rans Administration facilities, staffing, hospital
care, and medical school affiliations. Findings/Conclusions: In
a review of VA contracts with architezt-eiigineering firms,
r-commcnations were made to better determine a firm's
responsibiliv for defic;encies. In a report on methodology for
do84erminino needs for beds in hospitals, it was recommended that
a -.o model be u.ed. Tn a review of problems in recruiting anl
re+ininq physicians and dentists, some recruiting problems were
nOlaA, bul a surplus was found to exist in somve agencies. No
wilesorkad problems were found in staffing of health care
work-rs, but problems wer- noted relating to different pay
systems. Better use of outpatient services and improvem-nts in
manaqement of specialized medical services were recommended.
?evaluation was suggested of services relating to open heart
surfry and cardiac catheterization laboratories. New criteria
ware rpcommenled for the use of drugs for psvchiatric patients.
