Because of the overseas dependents education program's
rapidly ricing ccst and management, a review was requested. The
review focused on the folloviog issues: the extent to which the
Department of Defense is complying .ith taie coLgressional
directive to centralize management; and the ccparability of
overseas dependents schools with the stateside schools as to
teacher salaries, student/teacher ratios, ccst of operations,
and opportunities for cost reductions. Findings/Conclusions:
More than 150,000 pupils are enrolled in schools for U.S.
dependents overseas; these schools compare favorably with U.S.
schools in the areas of student/teacher ratios and teacher
salaries. As directed by the Congress, the cversqas school
system has been reorganized to centralize its management.
Recoamendati'as: School costs can be reduced by employing more
U.S. citizens and fewer foreign nationals a~d by finding
alternative means for student transportation. (Author/S)
