           Food Additive Aspartame


           Food and Drug Administration

           Department of Health, Education, and Welfare




           On July 26, 1974, fhteFood and Drug Admin-
           istration published a regulation approving the
           use of aspartame, an artificial sweetener.
           Later, questions were raised regarding adyerse
           effects of the additive on health. at'x(i)

           Before these questions were answered, prelim-
           inary results of an agency investigation indi-
           cated discrepancies existed in the data sub-
           mitted in support of aspjat-ae's safety,

           On December 5, 1975,jh e regulation approv-
           ing the use of aspartame was suspended.
           Aspartame has not been, nor will it be,
           marketed until all questions about its safety
           have been answered.
