                               WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2016

                                                     U.S. SENATE,
SUBCOMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND WATER DEVELOPMENT,
                                            COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS,
                                                             Washington, DC.
The subcommittee met at 2:32 p.m., in room SD-138, Dirksen
Senate Office Building, Hon. Lamar Alexander (chairman) pre-
                  siding.
Present: Senators Alexander, Collins, Feinstein, and Udall.
                    Also Present: Senator Whitehouse.
OPENING STATEMENT OF SENATOR LAMAR ALEXANDER
Senator ALEXANDER. The Subcommittee on Energy and Water
Development will please come to order.
This afternoon, we're having the first of two hearings to discuss
the future of nuclear power in our own country. We'll have the sec-
ond one in November or early December.
Today, we'll discuss the importance of nuclear power, the biggest
challenges facing it, the status of the Department of Energy's nu-
clear research and development-and we certainly welcome Sec-
retary Moniz here to help us do that-and things Congress can do
                  to support nuclear power.
In our next hearing, we'll discuss basic energy research and de-
velopment to support nuclear power, the work that's being done to
extend the licenses for existing reactors from 60 to 80 years, devel-
opment of new advanced nuclear technologies, including small reac-
tors, accident-tolerant fuels, and advanced reactors.
Senator Feinstein and I will each have an opening statement. I'll
then recognize any other Senators on the committee for up to 5
minutes for an opening statement, and then we've invited Senator
Whitehouse-and we certainly welcome him-to make some re-
marks at today's hearing. So, we'll turn to him as soon as Senator
Feinstein and I make our opening statements, Sheldon, if that's all
                  right with your schedule.
And then Secretary Moniz we'll go to you after that.
Our second panel-and we're delighted to have them and to wel-
come back Judd Gregg, former United States Senator and Governor
from New Hampshire, and the Leadership Chair of nuclear mat-
ters, and Jay Faison, founder and CEO of ClearPath Foundation.
That'll be the panel after the Secretary of Energy.
