October 28, 1908.
I thank you sincerely for your kind and generous greet-
ings, and I thank you for my share of the pleasure and
inspiration coming from the splendid demonstration of pa-
triotism and affection we have witnessed.
It is not as a stranger that I come before an audience of
the people of Ohio; my memory goes back to the opening of
the campaign at Akron, when there sat at my side and spoke
from the same platform, laboring together for the support
of Republican principles two old and valued friends, Mark
Hanna and Joseph Benson Foraker. My memory goes
back to the campaign of i9oo, when upon the call of that
noble and lovable patriot and friend, William McKinley, I
came to Canton to speak for his Administration and to de-
liver his message to the people whom he loved and knew. I
have come again upon the call of another great son of Ohio,
great in the force and clarity of his intellect, great in the
magnanimity of his heart, great in the capacity for labor and
for struggle that rests in the thews and sinews of his stalwart
