REPORT OF ABA ANNUAL MEETING
                        BY ARTHUR J. LEVY


  Led by Chief Justice Condon and El-
lis L. Yatman, President, thirty members
of the Rhode Island Bar attended the
meeting of the American Bar Associa-
tion in Washing the last week in Aug-
ust. Among  them  were Judge Paolino
of the Supreme Court and Judges Mur-
ray, Licht, Weisberger, MacKenzie of
the Superior Court, Colin M. Makepeace
and  Arthur J. Levy, member   of the
House  of Delegates, Sayles Gorham,
President Elect and James H. Higgins,
Jr., Vice President, and Robert A. Coog-
gan, Superior Court Administrator.
  Messrs. Makepeace, Levy, Yatman and
Gorham  attended meetings of the Con-
ference of Bar Presidents, of which Mr.
Makepeace  is the National Recorder.
Rhode  Island was honored by the elec-
tion of Robert A. Coogan as Chairman of
the National Conference of Court Ad-
ministration Officers. Chief  Justice
Condon    attended  the  m e e t i n g s
of  the Conference of Chiel  Justices.
Judges Murray, Weisberger, MacKenzie
and Licht attended meetings of the Con-
ference of Trial Judges. Ambrose  B.
Kelly presented to the Section of Insur-
ance Negligence and Compensation Law


the session under his Chairmanship of
the  Fire Insurance Law   Committee.
Robert Pickard reported as a Committee
Chairman  to the Section on Taxation.
  Harvey S. Reynolds, Melvin L. Zurier
and George C. Davis, of the Rhode Is-
land  Commission  on  Uniform  State
Laws attended the National Conference
of  Commissioners on  Uniform  State
Laws during the week preceding the An-
nual Meeting. The  report of the Con-
ference was submitted to the House of
Delegates.
  Seventeen members of the Rhode Is-
land Bar were sworn in as members of
the United States Supreme Court in a
very colorful ceremony involving 1900
new  Supreme  Court lawyers from  all
over  the country. Those  from  each
state were presented by individual spon-
sors. Matthew W. Goring was the spon-
sor of the Rhode Island group.
  The  principal feature of this meeting
  of the American Bar Association was
  the participation as guests of nearly 1000
  barristers, solicitors and lawyers from
  the United Kingdom and  the British
  Commonwealth of Nations. These in-
