     SARNER TO ADDRESS
        ANNUAL MEETING

     Tax and Pre-Trial Seminars
     Planned for All-Day Session
Plans have been made to hold the An-
nual Meeting of the Rhode Island Bar
  Association at the Narragansett Hotel
on Monday, October 8. 1956. The pro-
gram as tentatively planned will in-
clude the entire day and evening. In
the morning there will be a seminar ses-
sion on the general subject of Tax
Problems in the Creation and Winding
Up of a Closely-Held Business. The
guest speaker will be the well-known
tax speaker Leonard Sarner, Esquire, of
Philadelphia, who addressed a Bar As-
sociation Institute in 1953. Mr. Sarner.
a member of the firm of Welkin, Sar-
ner and Cooper, is the author of 'Or-
  uanizational Problems of Small Busi-
nesses,'' a publication of the Committee
on Continuing Legal Education of the
American Law Institute collaborating
with the American Bar Association. He
is a frequent lecturer at law institutes
and conferences and it is expected that
his discussion will prove stimulating
and informative. In addition to the
principal spraker, there will be a dis-
cussion panel of outstanding local tax
practitioners. It is anticipated that the
emphasis will be mor on the wind-up
aspects of a closely-held business than
on Lhe organizational problems.
Luncheon will constitute part of the
program. and in the afternoon a semi-
nor is scheduled on the subject of Pre-
Trial and Discovery Procedure. The
guest speakers on this subject will be
Donald J. Farage, Esquire. of Philadel-
phia. and Claude B. Cross, Esquire,
of Providence. Mr. Farage is a member
of the firm of Richter, Lord & Farage
,and has also lectured extensively in
this field. This subject is of great in-
terest, not only in Rhode Island but
nationwide, because of the increasing
volume of litigation and consequent
congestion of court calendars. It is felt
that effective pre-trial and discovery
procedures substantially hell in re-
ducing such congestion.
In the evening the annual dinner of
the Association will be held, preceded
by the usual business meeting and also
by a social hour.
