ANNUAL MEETING TO PRESENT
   INSTITUTE   ON   CIVIL  TRIAL
   During the morning and a part of the
afternoon of the  October 10 Annual
Meeting of the Rhode  Island Bar As-
sociation to be held at the Narragan-
sett Hotel in Providence, an Institute
will be given on the subject of A Civil
Action - The Trial.
  Charles F. Cotton, Esq., Chairman of
the Continuing Legal Education Com-
mittee of the Rhode Island Bar Associa-
tion, will preside. The morning session,
which  will start at 10 A. M., will be
addressed by Wilfred R. Lorry, Esq., of
the Pennsylvania bar, on the subject of
The Trial of Civil Cases from a Plain-
tiff's Point of View. He will be fol-
lowed by  John R. McConnell, also of
the Pennsylvania bar, who will discuss
The  Trial of Civil Cases from a De-
fendant's Point of View.
  These  speakers have been obtained
through the cooperation of the Ameri-
can Law  Institute's Committee on Con-
tinuing Legal Education collaborating
with  the American  Bar  Association.
Both of these speakers have participa-
ted in similar institutes before a num-
ber of bar associations, have contrib-
ted articles to various legal magazines
and specialize in trial work. Mr. Lorry
is the author of the American Bar As-
sociation publication A Civil Action -
The  Trial, a copy of which will be
distributed to each person registering
together with outlines of each talk.
  At 12:30 P. M. the Narragansett Hotel
will serve luncheon, at the end of which
the two lecturers will answer questions
from   the audience.  The  afternoon
session will start at 2:15 P. M. and will
consist of a panel discussion led by
Aram  Arabian, James C. Bulman, Mat-
thew W. Goring, Gerald W. Harrington
and  Francis V. Reynolds, all of the
Rhode   Island Bar  Association, with
particular emphasis on Rhode  Island
law and practice in connection with the
trial of civil cases. It is expected that
a  further question and answer period
will follow the afternoon session.
  There  will be a modest registration
fee for the Institute of $5 per person
and  a charge of $2 for the luncheon.
Reservations should be made   in ad-
vance if possible, on the form sent out
by the Bar Association office with the
notice of the annual meeting.


AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION
    HOLDS   ANNUAL MEETING
  Some  twenty-five members   of the
Rhode  Island Bench and Bar attended
the annual  meeting of the American
Bar  Association held in Philadelphia
the week  of August 22.  With  head-
quarters at the Bellevue-Stratford Ho-
tel and about five thousand lawyers in
attendance, the Convention got off to
a busy week of activity climaxed by an
address by President Eisenhower in In-
dependence Square, at a program cele-
brating the two hundreth  anniversary
of the birth of the great U. S. Chief Jus-
tice John   Marshall. Vice  President
Nixon was the principal speaker at the
annual banquet and Chief Justice War-
ren, Attorney General Brownell, Wilbur
M.  Brucker, Secretary of the  Army,
and Senator Margaret  Chase Smith of
Maine, were  among  the  other major
speakers during the week.
  The  House of Delegates, the A.B.A.
policy making  body, met  daily, and
Rhode  Island lawyers were represented
by their own delegates, Henry C. Hart
and  Colin MacR   Makepeace.   Social
Security for lawyers was  among  the
many  subjects discussed, and the dele-
gates were requested to poll their re-
spective State Bars on  the  question
whether they would accept compulsory

          ASSOCIATION
     PLANS   LECTURE SERIES
  The Committee  on Continuing Lega
Education has announced  plans for a
series of practicing law institutes coln -
mencing  this Fall covering practical
problems in  all major fields of law
with particular emphasis on Rhode Is-
land statutes, decisions and procedure.
It is proposed to make the institutes an
annual series with not less than four
institutes each year. Present plans, ac-
cording to Charles F.  Cottam, Com-
mittee Chairman, indicate that a nomi-
nal charge will be made to cover the
costs of the program.
  The first institute will be held in early
November.   The Executive Committee
of the Bar Association has already ap-
proved the plans.
  The Committee  on Continuing Legal
Education announced its plans with the
following statement:
  The Rhode  Island Bar Association's
Committee on Continuing Legal Educa-
tion has made plans to conduct a series
of  practicing law institutes for the
members  of the Rhode Island Bar.
  These institutes will cover all major
fields of law as it is practiced in Rhode
Island and the procedural aspects of the
practice before State and Federal ad-
ministrative bodies.
