Board supports revised abuse act,
opposes divorce rule proposals

vestment policy for certain Association
funds
Margaret Kilaw of the Family Law
Section summarized the section's
resolution endorsing the bill's amend'
ments to the abuse act he bill includes
a proposal to create a statewide regis-

The amendments also would prohibit
the issuance of mutual protection or
dee, which in practice. Klaw said. 'nul
lifies much of the effectiveness of
protection orders The bill permits the
extension of protection orders for peri-
ods longer than a year if plaintiffs show
that there is a continuing risk of harm.
Ilaw stated, however, that the se-
tion does not endorse the bilfs exten
sion of the defintion of abuse to include
a course of conduct which demon-
strates an intent to cause substantial
emotional distress to the plaintiff That
language would likely be challenged in

Next. Elizabeth Bennett of the Fam
ily Law Section urged the Board to ap
prove a resolution opposing the pro-
posed amendments to the Pennsylvania
Rules of Civil Procedure Relating to
Bifurcation in Divorce Actions, as set
forth in October 1993
The secton's resolutin states that the
amendments would provide for auso
matic bifurcation in divorce actions This
