Getting Personal:

MyNTIBAR

Launches

By Dan Wise

Hundreds of NH Bar members have
already taken advantage of the associa-
tion's new online member dashboard,
MyNHBAR, to quickly and efficiently
complete their annual licensure renewal
obligations.
Just paid my dues and filed my
[trust accounting] form in under five
minutes! That was SUPER easy, com-
mented one attorney. Smooth and pain-
less, wrote another.
At launch, all members saw red as
the web page was dominated by colored
bars, each representing the members'
compliance status on the major steps for
renewal - mandatory NHBA dues and,
for most members, NH Supreme Court
fees, minimum continuing legal educa-
tion credit reporting and the annual trust
account compliance certification. Red
turns to green for users, once the steps
are completed (although not instantly -
up to two business days are needed for
the online filings to be posted to the
member dashboard).
Each year, the NH Bar Association
has taken measured steps toward mod-
ernizing the paper-based process of at-
torney license renewal. First, there was
invoicing via email and online payment,
and, last year, the launch of the Attor-
ney Reporting Tool (ART), which gave
members an online portal to report and
track their progress toward meeting the
minimum continuing legal education re-
quirement.
This year, a giant step forward - as
the MyNHBAR dashboard and the de-
velopment of an online Trust Account
Compliance form enabled all of the re-
newal steps to be completed without pa-
per or postage. The development of the
personalized member portal took place
in conjunction with several rule changes
approved by the NH Supreme Court to
synchronize a patchwork of annual dead-
lines for various rules related to attorney
licensure.

Medical-Legal Partnerships Get Results for Patient- Clients

By Anne Saunders

    Child Health Services in Manchester
was treating a family with two children
suffering from asthma.
Exposure to the cold could trigger
their asthma symptoms, so when the heat-
ing system quit in their apartment, and the
landlord failed to make the necessary re-
pairs, the family found itself with a medi-
cal problem that was being exacerbated by
a legal problem.

They would come here sick, ex-
plains Rosa Escobar, a social worker at
Child Health Services (CHS).
When an initial call to the landlord
failed to solve the problem, Escobar con-
tacted Candace Cappio Gebhart, a parale-
gal with New Hampshire Legal Assistance.
Cappio Gebhart is one of two paralegals as-
signed to a new medical-legal partnership
program with the Manchester Community
Health Center, which includes CHS.
    Cappio Gebhart showed the children's

mother how to file a 540-A petition in
court, and the landlord was ordered to fix
the heat. Knowledge is power, she says.
We're trying to empower these folks.
Since then, the family has found bet-
ter housing. Because the children's asthma
affects their school attendance and their
mother's ability to work, decent housing is
important not only to their health, but also
their financial stability.

Winning Honorably

By Philip Schreffler

THE CASE WAS A LOSER FROM THE START.
  Opposing counsel would out-maneuver me
easily. Contrary evidence as sturdy as wet
tissue paper, and the client rarely provided
documents in a timely fashion. Even worse,
the client was arrogant and unsympathetic,
sure to irritate any judge. He refused to
settle. insisted on a hearing, and on
testifying. Yes, he was entitled to a
day in court, I\was sure to tell him,
but he was not entitled to win.
