New Domestic Violence Laws
Affect Civil and Criminal Practice

By Kristen Senz
In what has been a landmark legislative year
for advocates of domestic violence victims in New
Hampshire, the NH Legislature recently passed
seven bills aimed at preventing relationship vio-
lence and strengthening protections for victims.
The new laws codify the crime of domestic
violence, strengthen the state's human trafficking
law, and enable the court to terminate the parental
rights of rapists and to order that supervised visi-
tation take place in centers with certain security
measures in place. Additionally, civil domestic vio-

tence orders will be able to include protection for
household animals; employers will be prohibited
from discriminating against victims; and a commit-
tee will study sexual abuse prevention education in
eementary and secondary schools.
Senate Bill 318, aso known as Joshua's Law,
establishes the crime of domestic violence by creat-
ing a new section of NH RSA Chapter 631, with-
out creating any new substantive offenses. After the
law takes effect Jan. 1, assault and related offenses

group, with a higher-than-average probability of be-
ing really good lawyers and good people, says Don-
ald Sienkewicz, NHBA Leadership Academy Class

bound to make you more useful to your clients, your
colleagues, and your community.
If you are an attorney in practice three to 10
years, now is the time to apply for the NH Bar As-
sociation's Leadership Academy Class of 2015. The
application deadline is Friday, July 18. Programming
begins in October and ends in June 2015.
Leadership Academy is a nine-month program,
usually meeting once a month, that provides in-depth

training and exposure to leadership skills, heps you
meet movers and shakers in various professional and
government sectors in the state, and engages you with
a small group of peers drawn from all parts of the legal
community. Shadow a judge for a day, practice testify-
ing before a mock legislative hearing, practice leader-
ship and networking techniques, and apply your skills
to produce a service project as part of a team.
To ensure a diverse group of practitioners can par-
ticipate, tuition assistance to pay the $750 fee for the
program is available.
Please turn to page 7 for past participants' lists of
the top reasons to join the Leadership Academy. Visit

Patent Attorney Finds Happiness in Stock Car Racing

By Carol Robidoux
There are two things that make pat-
ent attorney Keri Sicard giggle out loud
- seeing her name on the company statio-
nery at Concord law office Loginov & Si-
card, and speeding across the finish line at
White Mountain Motorsports Park in her
cherry-red Chevy Cavalier mini-stock race
car, emblazoned with yellow flames.
I've only been a partner for six
months, so yeah, I still literally giggle
when I see my name on the letterhead,
says Sicard. And when it comes to racing,
even though I still get nervous enough to

feet like throwing up before every race, as
soon as I'm out on the track, the adrena-
line kicks in and it's just pure excitement.
She's been racing at White Mountain
Motorsports for 14 years.
Most people get into stock car rac-
ing because they have a parent or family
member involved. For me, it just so hap-
pened that my family had a condo in Lin-
coln, where we would go to ski. When I
was about 12, a neighbor asked my dad if
he knew there was a racetrack just down
the road, in Woodstock. My dad and I de-
cided to check it out one Saturday, and
we've been going ever since, Sicard says.

I think my dad has missed two Saturday
races in 20 years.
Sicard soaked up everything she could
about stock car racing, finally entering her
first race at age 17, behind the wheel of a
four-cylinder, red-and-white mini stock
Volkswagen Scirocco.

I was one of maybe two girLs racing,
and I finished sixth in points my first sea-
son, says Sicard.
Between college, career and kids, Si-
card, 31, has been in about 50 races over
