ith 52 attorneys and a total of 130 employees, the
New Hampshire Attorney General's Office is one
of the largest law firms in the state. With its high
profile and high-stakes caseload, and its multiple, sometimes
clashing masters among the executive, legislative and judi-
cial branches, it surely is among the most complex to man-
age.
But Kelly Ayotte, 36, who inherited the job not quite a
year ago following the resignation of Peter W, Heed, appears
unruffled by the challenges of the multifaceted job - a posi-
tion she uncertainly occupies as a holdover appointment
pending action by the governor of the opposing party.
Meanwhile, continued success further increases the pres-
sure on Ayotte -such as when the U.S. Supreme Court ac-
cepts your case, Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New
England. The appeal seeks to reinstate a law regarding abor-
tions for minors that calls for parental notification with only
strict exceptions. The Court's decision to take the case en-
gendered strong reactions nationwide on both sides of the

the country, the case will be closely watched. Add to that the
ongoing pitched battle in the US Senate over judicial nomi-

Cathy Stacey is a new member of the New Hampshire
Bar, sworn in on May 25 . She is also the Register of
Deeds for Rockingham County, a single mother of
three-and a 2004 admittee to the Massachusetts Bar.
[The NH swearing-in took place on the day this edition
of Bar News went to the printer. The June 17 issue of Bar
News will contain more information about the latest group
of new admittees to the Bar.]
Stacey began her odyssey about five years ago. My de-
sire to attend law school dates back to the late 1980's, but
made no move to achieve that goal until I was almost 40,
she said.
In August of 2000 she enrolled in a full-time night pro-
gram at the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover, at,
tending school three nights a week. I spent all my free time
studying, she went on. My daily regimen began with get-
ting my three children off to school, continued with a full
day at the Registry of Deeds and then I would go home, check
the kids' homework, get supper on the table-
and finally go off to school myself.
On June 4, 2004, Stacey was awarded her June 3, 20O
Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from the Massa-
chusetts School of Law-and was sworn into
the Massachusetts Bar on June 16. As a New
Hampshire native, however, she said, it was
extremely important to me to pass the New Kr
Hampshire bar examination. I am happy to say Wi
I succeeded. It was an especially remarkable feat Bu
for this multi-tasking mom and law student, as
only 50 percent of the candidates taking the
test in February passed.
But I couldn't have done it without my
parents; they've been there for me on both a
personal and professional level during the past
