Hearing for
Professionalism
Course March 22
During the past year the Professionalism Com-
mittee has studied the desirability of requiring
North Carolina attorneys to take a mandatory
course in professionalism. On October 18 the
Professionalism Committee, having concluded that
intensive instruction in the subject of profes-
sionalism would benefit the members of the bar,
the profession as a whole, and the public, sub-
mitted a proposal to the Executive Committee of
the council calling for the amendment of the CLE
rules to require that all North Carolina lawyers at-
tend a five-hour block course in professionalism/
practical ethics every three years in lieu of the cur-
rent three-hour professional responsibility block
course. The Executive Committee decided that the
proposal, which is reproduced below, should be pub-
ished for coiment and made the subject of a
public hearing prior to final consideration by the
council in April.
A public hearing concerning the proposal was
held on December 7, 1990. Unfortunately, notice
of the hearing, which was contained in the fall edi-
tion of the Newsletter, was not received in time to
permit many interested attorneys and organiza-
tions to arrange to be present. For that reason a
second public hearing has been scheduled on
Friday, March 22, 1991, at 2:00 p.m. in the coun-
cil chambers of the North Carolina State Bar head-
quarters at 208 Fayetteville Street Mall in
Rleigh. Any interested individual or organization
desiring to address the committee concerning any
aspect of the proposal should contact Tom Lunsford
at the State Bar office (P.O. Box 25908, Raleigh,
NC 27611, 919/828-4620) at least seven days
prior to the hearing. Written comments are also
solicited. A summary of the testimony from both
hearings and a report of any action taken by the
council in regard to the proposal will appear in the
next Newsletter. Please note that the proposal, if ap-
proved, will not increase the total number of hours
required annually.
