IOLTA RECEIPTS TOP
$2 MILLION
If approximately 1750 attorneys can generate $2 million
in 33 months, imagine how much money could be gen-
erated each year if all eligible attorneys were participating!
The Board of Trustees of the North Carolina State Bar
Plan for Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts is pleased to
report that total receipts have surpassed $2,000,000 since
the program first received funds in April, 1984. The IOLTA
program earned in excess of $1,000,000 during 1986, due
to increased participation by attorneys and financial
institutions in the program.
The Board of Trustees and staff continue to seek ways
to persuade attorneys who are not participating in IOLTA
to sign up for this program that benefits the public and
enhances the reputation of our profession. As we all know,
the image of lawyers had been tarnished by the misdeeds
of a few. IOLTA provides a simple way for attorneys to help
improve our image. Research for an annotation to the
Rules of Professional Conduct, the provision of legal
assistance to the poor, assistance with local volunteer
lawyer programs and funds for alternatives to litigation to
help further the administration of justice are made
possible by the participation of attorneys in the IOLTA
program. Approximately 90% of all IOLTA funds is spent
on grants.
Participation in the IOLTA program is easily accom-
plished by completing a sign up form for the financial
institution and one for the Board of Trustees of IOLTA.
The Board has developed a number of client notice forms
which are proved at no cost to the attorneys to assist
attorneys in giving their clients an opportunity to know of
their participation in IOLTA. The IOLTA program does
much good, is easy to participate in, and costs the
attorney nothing since service charges are paid by IOLTA.
You can contact the IOLTA office foi information on
how you can sign up. questions about your participating
