Chief Justice Harvey McGehee Holds Plaque Presented by Bar

Chief Justice Harvey McGehee, of the
Mississippi Supreme Court was presented
with handsome plaque by the Miss. State
Bar at ceremonies held in his honor.
The presentation of the plaque was made
at the Court's regular session, with Hon.
Ed Currie of Hattiesburg, president of the
Bar, describing the 76-year-old Chief Jus-
tice as a great jurist, a great man, a man
of character; a man not only of intellect
and ability, but a man of great courage.
Chief Justice McGehee, a past president
of the National Conference of Sta'tde Chief
Justices, retired from the high. tribunal on
Jan. 6.
In presenting the plaque Mr. Currie 4aid
only one other man served as long ori the
bench or as chief justice. Only latIzs-
tice Sydney Smith served intre than thef'
26 years spent by McGehee on the High
Court and longer than his 15 years as Chief
Justice.
Mr. Justice Percy Lee, who succeeds to
the post of chief justice read a letter signed
by all other Justices as follows:
Your dedication to the law and to the..
alliliistration of justice has l)('( con-
sistent and unglagging over the years. All
of us have observed your energy, industry
and conscientious devotion to duty.
Your ability to grasp the law and evi-

dence, and present them to your associates
without notes or memoranda has never
ceased to be a marvel to us. Your work
and its results in opinions which have gone
into books meet the highest standards of
lawyer and judge.
Back of all this work and effort there
is in your heart a consuming passion for
justice. and resolute purpose to insure that
each litigant shall have a fair trial and a
square deal under the law and evidence.
--cJudge McGehee is a native of Franklin
County andserved as a county prosecuting
attorney, state senator, chancery judge and
circuit judg'e before he was named to the
Supreme Court bench by former Gov.
Hugh White in 1937 to succeed the late
Justice W. H. Cook. He is married to the
fo;rmer Miss Willie Belle Brinson of Law-

C6ov. Ross Barnett and Atty. Gen. Joe
Patterson attended the ceremony, as did
Mrs. MeGehee. Judge M c G e h e e said,

I.ong-tiou' Supreur'e.oort Clerk Toin Q.

friends and colleagi' s to the Chief Justice
Judge' Neville Patterson tf Monticello

Squire Albert S. Bozeman, Sr., the
nation's oldest practicing a t t o r n e y, was
honored on his 100th birthday at a party
by several hundred of his friends.
The celebration was held in the First
Baptist Church of Meridian where Bozeman
has been a member since 1879.
After hearing tributes from Gov. Ross
Barnett and Sen. John C. Stennis, Bozeman
told those gathered:
I thank you all from the bottom of
my heart. The very fact that you are here
tonight makes this a happy occasion for
me.
Then the Squire told several j o k e s
which had the group in stitches. Then, in a
more serious tone, he said:
I have a child-like faith in God. I
believe what the Bible says just because
it says so. I believe in the Lord Jesus
Christ, in his deity, death and resurrection.
I hope you all believe it.
Gov. Barnett said the world would be
better if there were more men like Boze-
man.
Judge Bozeman is one of the most re-
markable, unselfish men I have ever known.
if we had more men like him, who at all
nio try to help someone, we would have
a better world in which to live.
