NEW LEGISLATION
SPONSORED BY BAR
The Mississippi State Bar is sponsoring
several important bills before the present
legislature. The Mississippi State Bar, on
recommendation of its Study Committee
approved at Convention, has suggested cer-
tain changes in the pleading and substan-
tive law of the State. Some of these sug-
gested changes are:
Extend period of probation In cases of
desertion and-or failure to support minor
children.
Permit circuit and county court judges
to adjudge that driver's licenses not be
revoked in first offender hardship cases.
Designate contents of record on appeal
and provide for abridging the record by
omintting irrevelant matter.
Limit time within which deraignment of
title must be shown In bill to confirm title
to real estate or to cancel and remove
clouds thereon.
Abolish preliminary proceedings before
justice of peace in bastardy proceedings.
Permit court to fix penalty in rape cases
upon guilty plea.
Permit court to fix penalty in carnal
knowledge cases upon guilty plea.
Additional methods of serving notice In
legal proceedings.
Provide method of notice of process for
transfer or removal of cases when the count-
erclaim  exceeds the monetary jurisdiction
of court.
Establish grounds and statutory proce-
dure for adjudication and annulment of
marriages.
Increase value of undivided interest of
minors in real estate which may be sold
without guardianship.
Allow defendant to bring in new parties
as cross-defendants within discretion of the
court.
Provide an additional penalty of im-
prisonment in rape cases for term of years.
Other matters to be presented include:
the Department of Justice Building bill,
revision  of corporation  laws based  on
the Model Business Corporation Act, a
bill to set up a Judicial Council and the
Uniform Commercial Code Bill. (The Uni-
form Commercial Code was approved in
principal at the last Bar Convention.)
Several of the proposed bills have been
introduced in the legislature and others will
be introduced in the near future. N. W.

committee.

Workmen's Compensation
Seminar At Ole Miss
February 16
The Workmen's Compensation Commit-
tee of the Mississippi State Bar has com-
pleted their plans for a seminar for the
Mississippi lawyers. The seminar is set for
February 16, 1962 at the Continuation
Center at the University of Mississippi and
is a project sponsored by the State Bar
and the Law School of the University of
Mississippi. Registration fee for the one-
day meeting is $10.00.

Chief Justice lHarvey McGehee of the
Mississippi Supreme Court has been for the
fourth time named a member of the Nation-
el Awards Jury of Freedom's Foundation at
Valley Forge. This was the second time
that Chief Justice McGehee has made the
trip to Valley Forge.
