Early Start Needed On Law Day USA Planning
President Hugh N. Clayton of the Mississippi State Bar has urged every Bar Associa-
tion in the State to participate in Law Day U.S.A. by conducting programs to make the
citizens of the State aware of Law Day U.S.A. This program is the Free World's Answer
to the Communist May Day Program. Members needing information should contact
E. C. Ward (Natchez) or Mrs. Alice Nevels, Secretary of the Mississippi State Bar
(Jackson).
The following reprint from the American Bar News gives valuable information:
Because Law Day USA next May 1 falls on Sunday, with a resultant separation
of church and secular observances, it is especially urgent that local bar association com-
mittees get an early start on their planning for the 1960 event. Many local bar com-
mittees already are at work. For the most part observances in the schools, courts and
before civic organizations will take place on Monday, May 2.
Apart from the fact that the focal point of the 1960 Law Day USA will be the
churches, because of the affinity of our religious and legal traditions, there are strong
indications that the observance will be considerably broadened next year. For example,
the U. S. Naturalization Service has endorsed the American Bar Association proposal
that U. S. district courts arrange, where possible, to hold special naturalization hearings.
Also, the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, the national organization of more
than 700 local outdoor advertising companies, has approved a Law Day USA billboard
design to be displayed on billboard space donated by member companies where this is
requested by bar associations. (See illustration.)
As a service to state and local bars, the American Bar Association is making the
billboards available to bar associations at actual lithographing and shipping cost ($3.00
per billboard). Similarly, the ABA is producing window display posters and newspaper
advertising designs.
At the request of the ABA, the Pitney-Bowes company has designed a special Law
Day USA postage meter stamp for use of law firms, bar associations or business firms such
as banks during the period preceding May first. Any law firm which has a postage meter
cancellation machine may obtain this stamp by writing direct to Pitney-Bowes, Inc.,
Stamford, Conn. The price is $12 for the R line type of meter, and $9.00 for the
smaller DM (desk) type.
The American Bar Association again will produce a Law Day USA pamphlet type
manual for the guidance of all persons having to do with arrangements for observances.
It will include statements of approbation as to the objectives of the observance from
leading churchmen of each of the three major religious faiths. It is hoped that the
manual will be available for distribution by Feb. 1.
With respect to the special naturalization hearings in the federal courts, the ABA
Committee on American Citizenship already has received letters from many of the district
court judges in the nation stating that plans are being- made to schedule such hearings
near May 1 next year.

LAW DAY USA BILLBOARD DESIGN
This poster designed in red, white and blue for use on billboard space donated
by outdoor advertising companies has been approved as a public service project by the
Outdoor Advertising Association of America, in cooperati6n with the American Bar
Association. The posters will be furnished at actual cost to bar associations. Those wish-
ing the billboards in their communities may arrange through local outdoor advertising
firms for their display during April, 1960. A small reproduction of the poster will be
furnished by ABA for window displays.
