ONTARIO BRANCH MEETING



    Theme is changig responsiblity


  Ontario lawyers will take a hard
look at their responsibility to society
and their changing role, at the An-
nual Mid-Winter Meeting of the On-
tario B3ranch of The Canadian Bar
Association in Ottawa, Feb. 4 to 6.
  John  Hodgson, Vice-president of
the Association for Ontario  said,
This is a time of drastic change in
law and  also in the attitude that
people take to law. We lawyers can-
not stand passively or indifferently on
the sidelines - this responding to
change is the theme of our program.
  In keeping with the general theme,
the subjects to be discussed at the
Ontario Branch meeting will include:
Acceptable law in an age of dissent;
Municipal law -  The rights of the
individual; On strike - The day of
no government -  Anarchy of liber-
ty; and Trends for the seventies.
  The  Hon. A. Leon Higginbotham,
Jr., Judge of The United States Dis-
trict Court, Philadelphia, will be the
keynote speaker at the Annual Din-
ner.
  Judge   Higginbotham, 42,  was
sworn in as a United States District
Judge for  the Eastern District of
Pennsylvania in 1964, to become the
youngest person to be appointed a
Federal District Judge within the past
30 years. He received his law degree
at Yale in 1952 and  holds degrees
from seven other universities and col-


leges.
  The meeting will open with a dis-
cussion group on Acceptable Law
in an age of dissent. The panel will
be chaired by The Hon. Mr. Justice
Bora Laskin, of The Supreme Court
of Canada.  Other members  of the
panel are W.  R.  Lederman,  Law
School, Queens University, Kingston;
Ontario Attorney-General A. A. Wis-
hart, and Judge Higginbotham.
  Subjects to be considered during
the two-day  meeting are:  People
power  and police power  -  Must
there be a conflict?; What is wrong
with The Bankruptcy Act?; On strike
-   The day  of no government -
Anarchy  or liberty?; Municipal law
-   The  rights of the  individual;
Foreign investment in Canada's nat-


ural resources; Cross-examining the
female plaintiff in a matrimonial case;
Trends for the seventies; The high
cost of dying; Small craft risk in-
surance; and Articling and The Bar
Admission Course  -  Abolitioa or
alteration?
  Administration of the Courts of
Ontario will also be a topic of con-
sideration. Ontario Law   Reform
Commissioners will explain and dis-
cuss the terms of reference for the
courts and will welcome suggestions
from the bar in general for considera-
tion by the commission.
  Seminars for the practising profes-
sion will be dealt with Feb. 4 and
The  Law  Society of Upper Canada
will hold its Annual Meeting on the
afternoon of Feb. 6.


Seminar to consider role of

computer technology in law practice


  The  CBA  Special Committee on
Jurimetrics is holding a workshop
seminar Feb. 12-13 in Ottawa.
  This meeting will bring together
lawyers, academics and representa-
tives of the computer industry for a
broad assessment of the present state


of the application of computer tech-
nology to the practice of law.
  In addition to reviewing this dis-
cipline, the group will also take a
look at its future development and
consider the most effective role for
the CBA  in this important field.
