I hold every man a debtor to his profession; from the which, as
men of course do seek to receive countenance and profit, so ought

and ornament thereto.-BACONS TRACTS.

Our Reason for Being
It is customary for a new publication to give the reason for its being
and the purpose that it hopes to serve in this work-a-day world.
The chief reason for the being of this periodical is necessity and the
second reason is service.
There has always been necessity for contact between the lawyers of
California; that necessity has never been so great as now, when the public
is asking for an accounting of the lawyers' stewardship of the administra-
tion of justice and taking account of conditions as they exist in the courts
today.
Ever since its organization in 1909 the California Bar Association has
needed just such a medium of contact with'the entire bar. For over six-
teen years the only contact between the Association and the great mass of
the unorganized bar has been almost altogether personal or thru occa-
sional articles in the press concerning its activities.
The Recorder at San Francisco has, it is true, given a great deal of
space and attention to the activities of the Association, but The Recorder
reaches chiefly the bar of the city in which it is published.
