                           Welcome to America?

               Public Opinion on Immigration Issues

In the fall of 2o16 and early this year, a few pollsters asked questions about temporary or permanent bans on
immigrants from certain areas. The results of these hypothetical questions are below. We await new polls on
President Trump's executive order now that the issue is real and not abstract. On the next page, we review some
questions asked about refugees from Syria coming to the United States-whom Trump's order has banned indefi-
nitely. On page 3, we return to a subject we examined in depth last May, public views on building a wall.
We devote the rest of this issue to public opinion on immigration. We look at historical and contemporary
opinions on whether illegal immigrants should stay or go, the perceived impact of immigration on the country
and on jobs, and the proper level of immigration. There are deep partisan disagreements on many of these issues.
Finally, we look at attitudes in 1965 toward the immigration reform legislation.
