handle is hein.ali/hrbor605619 and id is 1 raw text is: EUROPEAN ANNOTATIONS October 50, 1940
Memorandum: Interview with William B. Hale and Max Rheinstein,
October 30, 1940 in Chicago.
I first saw Hale after luncheon at Shoreland and in the evening
Rheinstein and his wife dined with me at that Hotel.
I. Told Hale need for $2500 for Rabel Fund. He said I could count
on his father's Fund for $500.00. The exact amount needed should be taken
up with Mrs. Humphreys. Consider whether more money can be gotten for
Rabel from the Foundations interested in refugees. liust explore other
possible resources.
II. Rheinstein agrees that a group is necessary for Rabel. Suggest
Goodrich, Cheatham and Lorenzen. (Of course Rheinstein must be included.
He agreed to interview Rabel in Ann Arbor Sunday, November 5rd., but I
determined that this was not necessary, in fact thought I wanted to see
Rabel alone and I wired him to that effect from my train Saturday morning,
November 2, 1940, the telegram being sent I think from the next station
beyond Battle Creek at which the streamlined train stopped (9.15 from
Chicago.)
Note: Had telephone talk November 1, with Lessing Rosenthal. Promised
to write him about Rabel's work and need for funds.
