Highlights of CJS Activities at the ABA Annual Meeting


The  ABA   Criminal  justice Section hosted a  wide  ar-
ray of  programs   and  activities during the ABA   _An-
nual  Meeting  on  August  4-8  in      San  Francisco, CA.

T'he Section sponsored  two  Presidential Showcase pro-
grams, Sexual Assault on  College Campuses  and The
New  Frontier Surveillarce Technolougy and the Law Oth-
er programs included: Today's Interpretation of Computer
Laws  Developed for a Bygone  Age: A  Study of Comput-
er C(rime, Prosecution & Defense; nrpreting  US  SEC
2011  Cybersecurity Risk: Corrupition 's New Arena: In--
ternational Sports in a Post-FIFA World; Pretrial Justice:
MNLaximizing Due IProcess and Public Safety C reating a
Conscious Prosecutor: The Client Pre-Indictment; Implicit
Bias and De-Biasing Strategies: A W'izrkshop f.r Judges and
Lawyers', Annual Survey of Supreme  Court  Decisins.

On  policy matters, resolution to adopt the Criminal Jus-
tice Standards on M ental Health (Revised 2016). as well as
co-sponsored resolution which supports the indupendence
of the judiciary and the legal professiorn and Opposes any
nation's detention of individuals without charge or access
to counsel, were passed by the ABA  House  of Delegates.

The CJS Council met and thanked the outgoing Chair judge
Bernice Donald. Under  Judge Donald's leadership, tie Sec-


ton continued its support of ClemencylProject 2014, National
Inventory of Collateral Consequences or Conviction and the
ABA  CIS Task Force on Law Enforcement Body Worn Cameras

In addition, Judge Donald increased collaboration with state
and  local bar associations and other ABA entities to en-
hance national understanding and awareness of issues such
as the school-to-prison pipeline, implicit hias, and colIateral
consequences, as well as neuroscience and criminal justice.

The Section also welcomed Matthew Redle as the Section Chair
for 2016-2017. M atitRedl- is the County and Prosecuting Attor-
ney for Sheridan County, yoWoming. He was first elected Pros-
ecuting Attorney in 1986 and had served as an assistant prose-
cutor since 1980. In January of 2014 he was appointed to serve
as a memnber of the National Commission on Forensic Science.

In addition, the CIS elected Morris Sandy Weinberg as the
Chair--Elect. and Lucian Dervan as the First Vice Chair. The
Section also elected following new members of the Cnun-
cil: Kim Parker (Vice Chair -at ILarge), Kevin CurtaIn, Jaime
Hawk,  Sarah Redfield, Steven Zeidrnan (members) and Mi-
chael Dean  (Young Lawyer  nember), In additio'n, the past
chair W illiam N. Shepherd became the Ct iminal Justice Sec-
tion Member-at-Large  of the ABA   Board  of  Governors.
