The Criminal Justice Section enjoyed great success at the
2013 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, August 8-13. The
Section welcomed its new Chair, Mathias (Mat) H. Heck,
Jr., who will serve the 2013-2014 year. Section Chair Heck
currently serves as the Prosecuting Attorney for
Montgomery County, OH. Chair Mat Heck will focus on
the Section's efforts to increase the public's knowledge
and awareness of child abuse and exploitation with an
emphasis on understanding how children, including those
who are runaways, non-English speaking, or who have
substance abuse problems can become victims of human
trafficking, with the goal of addressing this global crime
and broadening the Section's international presence.

The Section featured several hot-topic programs and free
CLEs. The following CLEs were featured for members:

of Supreme Court Decisions-Criminal Cases; Corporate Social

Preparedfor the Regulato{y Deluge; and Faster, Better Justice: Cutting
Edge Apps for Lawers Can Simplify Your Practice and Increase
Your Efficienc in the Courtroom.

The following complimentary programs were also offered
to members who attended Annual Meeting: Brand New
Tools That Can Help You Combat Implicit Bias: Jugy Instructions,
Voir Dire Questions and More; and Child Victims and the Juvenile
Justice System: Approaches to Helping Victims at Risk of
Dekinquencies. The Section also hosted a White Collar Town
Hall Program on Corporate Internal Investigations in the Midst
of a Government Inqui: A View from All Sides, which was
free to all members.


The Section hosted several meetings including: Executive
Committee; Implicit Bias Advisory Group; Prosecution
Function Committee; Defense Function Committee; Racial
& Ethnic Justice & Diversity Committee; Council; and the
Juvenile Justice Committee. In addition, the Section
presented a screening of Smuggled, a film on human
trafficking, with comments by then-ABA President, Laurel
Bellows.


On August 10, the Section was recognized for its fine work
and received the SOC Meritorious Service Award for its
National Inventory of the Collateral Consequences of
Conviction (NICCC) Project. The Award was accepted by
Section Chair, Mathias H. Heck, Jr. [photo above right,

Also on August 10, the ABA House of Delegates approved
six recommendations sponsored by the Criminal Justice
Section regarding the gay panic defense, youth in the
juvenile justice system with mental health and substance
abuse disorders, child abuse and neglect laws, the re-
examination of strict liability offenses, plea agreements that
waive a criminal defendant's post-conviction claims on
various topics, and the ABA CriminalJustice Standards on Fair
Trial and Pubic Discourse.
