Chair William Shepherd urged Robert Johnson the co-
chair of the Section's International Committee to get the
committee to join an effort to make the CJS more active
internationally. While the CJS had a very active Global
Anti-Corruption Task Force, there was not a great deal
of other activity on the international front.

As you can see, Bob Johnson took this to heart. Section
Director Jack Hanna states, As a former Section Chair,
Bob's record is a great one for setting the wheels in motion
through long range planning for big accomplishments such
as the State Policy Implementation Project and the Criminal
Justice Congress. Bob and others in the Section leadership
took a look at new and complex money laundering and
fraudulent financial schemes rampant in today's uncertain
global economy; white-collar criminal prosecution and
practice especially cross border discovery; the globalization
of anti-corruption investigations and prosecution and the
issues surrounding global terrorism and human trafficking.

They concluded that modern criminal justice is
characterized by trans-national law enforcement initiatives
and US companies and foreign companies doing work in
the US and their lawyers must become aware of these
trends and their impact on attorney client privilege. In
response to these phenomena and the resulting needs of
its member practitioners, the CJS has taken a number of
steps to become more relevant to an international audience.

One of the first international endeavors of the CJS was
the establishment of the Global Anti-Corruption Task
Force (co-chairs Andrew S. Boutros and T. Markus Funk).
In the second year since inception, the Task Force has had
another dynamic year characterized by significant
accomplishments.

As part of its online publication function the Task Force
published a widely-heralded Special Report on Corporate
Compliance. The Special Report was authored by the
University of Chicago Corporate Lab, in conjunction with
Microsoft. The Task Force, in conjunction with the

University of Chicago Law School and its Legal Forum
Journal, co-hosted a special symposium at the Law School
entitled Combating Corruption. The Symposium was
capped off with a keynote address by Patrick Fitzgerald,
the United States Attorney for the Northern District of
Illinois.

The Task Force Co-Chairs led an April 2012 panel
presentation at the International Section's Spring Meeting
in New York City and is assisting in the planning of the
International Internal Corporate Investigations program
in Germany on December 8, 2012.

The Task Force has organized, recruited, and is in the process
of running a special student series in its Insights from
the Trenches feature. The Task Force is relatively new on
the anti-corruption scene, but, as indicated by the thousands
of web mentions it and its activities have received, it is
making significant strides towards becoming a preeminent
player in the field.

The Section this year is co-sponsoring the Fall Institute with
the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law
(the Society). The Society is an international leader in
criminal justice policy development and legal education in
criminal law. Hopes are that this collaborative relationship
