The Racia/Justice Improvement Project / Building Communit Trust
Initiative is the proud recipient of the American Bar
Association 2011 Section Officers Conference (SOC)
Meritorious Service Award. The Award recognizes
commendable service on behalf of the legal profession.
It was given for the Criminal Justice Section's outstanding
commitment and work on this project/initiative. The
Criminal Justice Section led the Building Community Trust
Initiative, in partnership with the ABA Section of Individual
Rights and Responsibilities and the ABA Council on Racial
and Ethnic Justice, funded by an ABA Board of Governors
Enterprise Grant. In collaboration with this project, the
Section also initiated the Racial Justice Improvement
Project, funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

The Project/Initiative has made valuable contributions to
the Association, criminal justice systems nationwide, and
the overall legal profession. During the past year, and
following through the current Association year, the
Criminal Justice Section, through the project/initiative has
encouraged cultural competency and sponsored events,
directed workshops and trainings, and published resources
to achieve racial justice goals and reduce or eliminate the
disparate racial impacts in the criminal justice system.

A Model Curriculum & Instructional Manual was
developed by the Criminal Justice Section staff and
consultant Catherine Beane. The curriculum provides
leaders of judicial, prosecutorial, and defense agencies with
information, resources, and training tools to support
educational efforts in cultural competency. The
dissemination of the curriculum began in late summer 2010
when the Section hosted a two-day training conference.
Forty-two individuals with racial justice expertise from all
over the nation attended this complimentary workshop to
initiate and encourage cultural competency. Each attendee
was provided with the printed curriculum and designated
preparatory conference reading materials. Moreover, Senior
Policy Advisor of the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Kim
Ball, offered each participant on-going and free technical

assistance to support and incorporate the attendee's new-
found knowledge in their local jurisdiction. Michigan,
Wisconsin, and West Virginia are just a few states that took
advantage of the BJA funding opportunity for continued
training.

Just recently the curriculum was the basis for a training of
the Section's Council members at their 2011 Spring
Conference Meeting in Miami, Florida and subsequently,
another complimentary in-house training of the curriculum
was conducted at the ABA office in Washington D.C. for
criminal justice system agency-representatives from
Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Cultural competency training was not only targeted at
criminal justice agencies; workshops were also conducted
at local law schools. On August 9' training on cultural
competency for the District of Columbia Law School's
incoming class of 2014 was a giant success. Moving
forward, the District of Columbia Law School has
demonstrated an interest in doing training on cultural
