The Department of State regrets to announce the receipt of a
report, by transatlantic telephone, from the American Legation in
Dublin of the sudden death tonight of the Honorable William
Wallace McDowell, Minister of the United States to the Irish Free
State. Mr. McDowell died suddenly at a banquet given in his
honor by Mr. de Valera, President- of the Executive Council of the
Irish Free State, while responding to a toast.
Also present at the banquet were former Ambassador Richard
Washburn Child; Mr. James Orr Denby, first secretary of the
American Legation; and Consul General Henry H. Balch.
The Secretary of State,. Mr. Cordell Hull, made the following
I was shocked and deeply grieved by news of the sudden death
this evening of Governor William Wallace McDowell, American
Minister to the Irish Free State. Born in Tennessee, the son of
John Henry McDowell, whom I knew well, he at an early age went
to Montana, where he had a long and valued career as a public
servant. During the month he was in Washington before sailing
to Dublin to take up his new duties, I had frequent occasion to see
