Emerson Stringham
1888-1960
Emerson Stringham was born March 8, 1888, in New
York City where lie received his early education. He
attended New York University Law School and was ad-
mitted to the bar in New York. Much of his college and
law school education was in evening schools, as he
worked at an early age. Later, while residing in Wash-
ington, he continued his education, receiving a J.D. de-
gree from a local law school. After being admitted to
the bar he commenced the practice of law in New York
City as an employed attorney and also as an independent
practitioner. After a few years, however, he moved to
New Jersey, living in Bergenfield, where he became ad-
initted to the New Jersey bar as attorney, and continued
to practice law. In 1914 lie temporarily abandoned a
legal career by accepting a Civil Service position as
Scientific Assistant in the Bureau of Fisheries to become
engaged in biological field work. This move was un-
doubtedly due to Stringliam's early and continued inter-
est in natural history. He was first stationed at the
Homer, Minnesota, station of the Bureau of Fisheries
and later detailed to the Fairport, Iowa, laboratories.
In 1916 lie was transferred as an assistant in the office
of the Commissioner of the Bureau of Fisheries, sta-
tioned in Washington, which position he held until trans-
ferred to the Patent Office on September 4, 1918 to the
position of fourth assistant examiner, as the entrance
grade was then called. At this time an appointment in
the Patent Office required the taking of a written Civil
Service examination which lasted three whole days and
was reputed to be the most difficult Civil Service exami-
nation given. In the Patent Office, Stringham was as-
signed to Division 21 where he soon examined applica-
tions for patents relating to knitting machinery. He re-
mained in Division 21 until January 1925 when he was
transferred to the Interference Division.
