Effects of the experimental
Saturday closing of liquor
retail stores in Sweden
BY ORVAR OLSSON
AND PER-OLOF H. WIKSTROM
Orvar Olsson is a staff member of the Swedish Ministry of
Health and Social Affairs, and Per-Olof Wikstrbm is affiliated
with the General Criminology Division of the Department of
Sociology, Stockholm University.
All sales of export beers, wines, and spirits in Sweden take
place in special state-owned liquor retail stores. In May
1981, the Swedish Riksdag resolved as an experiment that
liquor retail stores were to be closed on Saturdays between
June and September 1981. The purpose of this experiment
was to see whether Saturday closing would have a positive
impact on, for example, total alcohol consumption,
drunkenness, public order, and certain types of crime. The
government bill provided for an evaluation of the
experimental scheme, and the present article is a summary
of the results of that evaluation.
AUTHORS' NOTE: Olsson served as project leader and Wikstrbm as
secretary of the expert group for the evaluation of the effects of
experimental Saturday closings. The full report of the evaluation has
been published in Swedish: En Utviirdering ar Fi6rsoket med
Lrdagsstangda Systembutiker Sommaren 1981: Rapport fran en
expertgrupp, ISBN 91-38-06896-6 (Stockholm: Social Departmentet, DsS
1982:2).
