The Late Conrad Christian Silberbauer

Shortly after the close of the Napoleonic wars two brothers Silberbauer decided to emigrate from Bleckede, Germany, to South Africa. One settled in Cape Town and there are no male descendants of his branch. The other, the grandfather of the subject of this article, married a daughter of Surgeon- Captain Disandt, who had come to South Africa with General Janssens. He settled near Port Elizabeth and had two child- ren, a son, Johan Conrad, and a daughter, who married . son of the missionery, Dr. Philip. Conrad Christian Silberbauer was the younger son of Johan Conrad Silberbauer and his wife, Adamina de Smidt, and was born at Cape Town on 23rd August, 1863. He was educated mainly at the South African College, and in these days of controversy on the subject of bilingualism it is interesting to note that, although brought up in a Dutch-speaking home, he was an English prize essayist. Mr. Silberbauer was articled' to the firm of de Villiers and vani der Wall, his father's enthusiasm for the law having doubtless been stimulated by success before the Privy Council in his case against van Breda over water rights on the Oranjezicht Estate. Family records do not show whether the decision to article the son was made before or after receipt of the victor's attorney and client bill of costs. A premium of 35 guineas was paid, the late Mr. Paul, de Villiers stipu- lating that in the event of the articles being transferred he should nevertheless retain the whole fee. Mr. Silberbauer did in fact transfer to the office of J. & H. Reid and Nephew. Immediately after his admission in 1885, Mr. Silberbauer opened an office in Bureau Street, Cape Town, where he soon established a considerable local and country connection. He was one of the first attorneys to practise actively in the Magistrates' Courts, the work of which had up to that time been mainly in the -hands of law agents.
