handle is hein.journals/soaf96 and id is 286 raw text is: NOTES AND COMMENTS THE LATE DR THE HON A GJENNETT At a special sitting of the Eastern Cape Division of the Supreme Court at Grahamstown on 13 December last tributes were paid to the memory of the late Dr the Hon A G Jennett, a former Judge President of the division. The career of DrJennett prior to his appoint- ment to the Bench was outlined in (1951) 68 SALJ 18, with a portrait of him. At the special sitting the Judge President of the Eastern Cape Division, Mr Justice J D Cloete, said: 'We are assembled here this morning to pay tribute to our colleague and friend Allen Gilmor Jennett, whose sudden death on Friday 8 December has shocked and saddened his colleagues and many friends. 'He was born at Graaff-Reinet on 4 August 1906, the eldest son of the late Mr R HJennett and MrsJennett. He received his first schooling at the kindergarten at Ballymote, County Sligo, in Ireland. On his return later to South Africa he had his primary shool education at Elliott in the Cape Province, and passed on to Gill College, Somerset East, where he matriculated. He then entered the Rhodes University College and took his BA degree in 1926 and the LLB degree in 1928. During this time he, with the late Bob Copeland, served articles with the old and renowned firm of Jonathan Ayliff, attorneys in Grahams- town. After qualifying he was admitted to practice as an attorney and was employed in firms in Pretoria and Knysna, but then changed his allegiance from that branch of the profession to be called to the Bar in the Eastern Districts Local Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa on 20 February 1930. By his industry and devoted application to his work he rose to senior status when he was made King's Counsel on 2 June 1947-two months before his forty-first birthday. After acting for a few months he was appointed to a permanent seat on the Bench of the Eastern Districts Local Division on 1 April 1949. On 12 May 1962 he became the Judge President of this division. 'In 1961 and on a second later occasion he acted as a judge of the Appellate Division, but he declined later, for good reasons, a perma- nent appointment to that Bench, and retired as Judge President of this division on 4 August 1976.
