What's New...

The following is a list of the announcements that have been sent to subscribers concerning new additions/enhancements, and other important tips about using HeinOnline.  We also invite you to read our most recent quarterly newsletter that is sent to all subscribing libraries.

July 29, 2004

It was great to see so many of you at the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) meeting in Boston! I hope the meeting was productive for all of you.

For those who visited our exhibit at AALL, we hope you had an opportunity to see a demonstration of the forthcoming Legislative Histories Library, which featured the controversial USA Patriot Act.  As mentioned in earlier announcements, dozens of legislative histories will be included in this library module when it is released in the coming months.

We also displayed the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents collection that will soon be included in the Federal Register Library and provided visitors with a first-hand look at a brand new library that we have been developing for quite some time: the Early American Law collection.  This soon-to-be-released library - initially based on the titles listed in Morris Cohen's Bibliography of Early American Law (Buffalo; William S. Hein & Co., Inc.; 1998) - contains many of the actual monographs that are listed in Cohen's award-winning set. Morris has helped us launch this new HeinOnline library by identifying 100 of the most exceptional titles from his Bibliography.  In addition to his selections, we will be adding several hundred more titles each year and plan to expand beyond American law monographs by including many early British and Commonwealth titles, as well. More details will follow in future list-serv announcements.

At this time, we are very pleased to announce the latest releases to HeinOnline ( http://heinonline.org ), featuring new periodicals such as George Washington International Law Review and Melbourne University Law Journal.

HeinOnline also contains a new library: the U.S. Attorney General Opinions Library. This module features the "Official Opinions of the Attorneys General of the United States," as well as the "Opinions of the Office of

Legal Counsel of the United States Department of Justice." As with all collections in HeinOnline, this is an image-based and fully-searchable collection.

July 1, 2004

The latest release in HeinOnline can be found below.  It includes new material for every library module in HeinOnline.

In addition to this new material, we would like to bring to your attention some enhancements to the Supreme Court Library collection in HeinOnline:

Supreme Court Economic Review and Supreme Court Review, two journals that are included in the Law Journal Library collection in HeinOnline, are now also included in the Supreme Court Library.  Supreme Court Economic Review, a publication of the University of Chicago Press, applies world class economic and legal scholarship to the work of the Supreme Court of the United States. Contributions typically provide an economic analysis of the events that generated the Court's cases, its functioning as an organization, the reasoning the Court employs in reaching its decisions, and the societal impact of these verdicts.  Supreme Court Review, also a publication of the University of Chicago Press, has won acclaim for providing a sustained and authoritative survey of the implications of the Court's most significant decisions.

In addition, we have added Morris Cohen and Sharon Hamby O'Connor's informative work, "A Guide to the Early Reports to the Supreme Court of the United States" (Littleton, Colorado; Fred B. Rothman & Co.; 1995).  "This book offers a guide to the first ninety volumes of the United States Reports. The years covered by those  volumes constituted the period of nominative (or nominate) reporting, i.e., reports named for the individual  who compiled, edited and published them, or arranged for their publication.  The early reporting of the Supreme Court is described here in three different respects: historically, biographically, and bibliographically."  (from the Preface).

We encourage all HeinOnline users to perform a full-text search in the Supreme Court Library collection to see how these new additions will enhance the value of HeinOnline to researchers of the U.S. Reports.

Other Important News:

After careful consideration and suggestions from many of the subscribers, the index volumes that were previously listed separately on the Collection Index page (found at http://www.heinonline.org/HOL/Index?collection=journals) have now been merged into the main titles. Rest assured that the index volumes are still available, but are not treated as separate titles as they have been in the

past.

Also, we have received several inquiries about HeinOnline's "Treaties and Agreements Library"; in particular the KAV agreements and extent of HeinOnline's searching features. For more than 30 years, Igor Kavass, a seasoned international law librarian and editor of several William S. Hein & Co., Inc. treaty publications, has identified and assigned unique "KAV" numbers to U.S. treaties and agreements that have yet to be officially

published by the U.S. Department of State.

In addition, Professor Kavass has provided elaborate indexing to ALL U.S. treaties that goes well beyond the scope of the U.S. Department of State's more-limited indexing. The Kavass' indexing affords the researcher greater flexibility when conducting treaty research. Without the extensive research work done by Igor Kavass, major gaps in U.S. Treaty coverage would exist.

Therefore, by including the KAV agreements and also Professor Kavass' indexing system, HeinOnline is able to deliver the most-comprehensive online source of U.S. treaties and other international agreements, all at an

extremely affordable price.

As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions about any of the library modules in HeinOnline. Please feel free to send them to my attention at b_jablonski@wshein.com, and thank you for your ongoing support of HeinOnline!

April 22, 2004

We are pleased to announce the addition of two new titles to HeinOnline's Treaties and Agreements Library - Treaties in Force and Guide to Treaties in Force.

Treaties in Force lists treaties and other international agreements of the United States which are on record in the Department of State. These are treaties that either have NOT expired/been denounced by the parties, been

replaced/superseded by other agreements, or otherwise definitely terminated.  While HeinOnline includes the current edition of this valuable publication, it also contains all volumes of Treaties in Force dating back to its 1995 inception.

Guide to Treaties in Force has been published every year since 1982.  HeinOnline's Treaties and Agreements Library provides the complete run of Guide to Treaties in Force, which has contained three parts and one

supplement in recent years:

In all, these new titles add more than 51,000 pages to HeinOnline.  We welcome your feedback at any time, and as always, thank you for your ongoing support of HeinOnline!

March 24, 2004

Today is a very exciting day in the history of HeinOnline. We are pleased to announce that the American Bar Association (ABA) has just signed an agreement that will allow us to include all 97 of their journals in HeinOnline. It goes without saying that we are truly looking forward to the addition of the ABA's high-quality journals in the coming months.

In addition, the International Bar Association has also signed an agreement that allows us to include their journals in HeinOnline.

By adding the journals of these two well-respected and prominent organizations to HeinOnline, there are now more than 1,100 journals that are included in HeinOnline or under contract to be included in future releases.

Next, the HeinOnline Federal Register Library has just been expanded to include volume 46 (1981). By the end of 2004, HeinOnline's Federal Register Library will include comprehensive coverage from 1936 through 1992.

Last but not least, "Welcome aboard" to our latest HeinOnline subscribers.  In the last list-serv message (sent March 11, 2004 and accessible from the "What's New" page at http://heinonline.org) we welcomed a very diverse group to the HeinOnline family of subscribers.

Since the last message, we are proud to announce that all of the law schools in Canada now subscribe to HeinOnline, several more Australian and Japanese law schools have become subscribers, and a high school in California is now also subscribing to HeinOnline! To all of our current subscribers, we sincerely thank you for your support of HeinOnline.

“Most-Cited Law Journals” collection in HeinOnline...

Several subscribers have asked us how we determined the “Most-Cited Law Journals” collection in HeinOnline

(http://www.heinonline.org/HOL/Index?collection=top30 <http://www.heinonline.org/HOL/Index?collection=top30> ).  This list was compiled based on the following cite: 94 Law Libr. J. 310, which is accessible in HeinOnline by following this link: http://www.heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/llj94   Kincaid Brown’s article takes into account surveys that were conducted over a period of 70 years, from 1930 through 2000.

At this time, we would also like to thank those subscribers that have given us excellent feedback about the new user interface.  We've incorporated several suggestions already, and welcome other suggestions for the new user interface.  Please feel free to send your comments to marketing@wshein.com

Overall, the response to the new user interface has been very positive.  In fact, Kerry Prindiville of Fresno County Public Law Library in Fresno, California summed up what many other subscribers have said, by stating, "I absolutely love the new interface!"  Thanks to Kerry and everyone else for their comments and suggestions.

If you have not yet explored the new interface, or the new library modules in HeinOnline, we encourage you to do so in the near future to familiarize yourself with the enhancements and added content.  HeinOnline's "U.S. Treaties and Other International Agreements" library is now the internet's most-comprehensive U.S. Treaty collection available, while the Official U.S. Reports Library is the only source for the Official U.S. Reports volumes from inception (1790)!  To visit the new interface simply follow this link, http://www.heinonline.org/HOL/Index?collection=journals

January 13, 2004

For the past week, you have had access to both the "old" user interface and the "new" user interface in HeinOnline (http://heinonline.org).  We made this available in order to allow for a transition period so that our subscribers could become accustomed to the new user interface.  This has also been a great opportunity for us to receive your feedback about the new interface, and we've been able to make modifications as a result of your comments.  We sincerely appreciate the feedback we have received in the last week, and encourage as much feedback as possible.  Please feel free to send your comments to marketing@wshein.com.

This message is a friendly reminder that the "old" HeinOnline interface will not be available after January 15th.  We hope you will take the time to visit the new interface and familiarize yourself with the new features and new libraries that are now available to you.  As always, support is available via e-mail at techsupport@wshein.com, through our toll-free number (800-828-7571) or our toll number (716-882-2600), or via fax (716-883-8100).

As always, thank you for your ongoing support of HeinOnline!

January 12, 2004

We have had some very positive feedback about the new user interface, and continue to encourage and welcome all of your comments.  Please feel free to send comments and questions to marketing@wshein.com.

One question that has been asked by several subscribers in the last couple of days involves the links in the new interface versus those in the old interface.

Rest assured that all existing links will be re-directed to the new interface as soon as we turn off the old interface.  It cannot be done until that time because then there would be no way to get to the old interface.  This means that your current catalog links DO NOT need to be changed to reflect the URL's that exist in the new interface.

If you have any questions about this matter, please send an e-mail to techsupport@wshein.com.  As always, thank you for your ongoing support of HeinOnline!

January 7, 2004

We invite you to log on to day and explore the new user interface, and as always, your feedback is important to us.  Please send your comments to marketing@wshein.com.

This year has been a record year for the overall usage of HeinOnline.  After a quick review of this year's current statistics, as well as a review of the last couple of years, I thought that many of you would be interested in seeing how much HeinOnline is being used by all of the subscribing institutions:

As mentioned in previous messages and newsletters, we have added new equipment to handle the increased usage, and we continually enhance the existing structure of HeinOnline to optimize the efficiency for both the research being conducted by the users, as well as the speed of delivery of the information that has been requested by users.  Very shortly, the mirrored site for HeinOnline will also be activated, and the new user interface will be launched.

As always, we sincerely thank everyone for their ongoing support of HeinOnline, and look forward to bringing you even more valuable content and new enhancements in 2004!

November 12, 2003

For those of you that have been with HeinOnline since the beginning, you already know how much the product has grown in such a short period of time.  From fewer than 25 journals to more than 700 that are now under contract, HeinOnline has very quickly become the world's largest, image-based legal research collection.

With the ongoing expansion of the Law Journal Library, which now includes nearly 150 "international law-related and non-United States journals", the addition of the U.S. Federal Register Library in HeinOnline, as well as the forthcoming addition of an official U.S. Reports Library and U.S. Treaties and other International Agreements Library, HeinOnline is evolving into a comprehensive source for image-based legal research material (i.e. It's not just law journals anymore!).

As a result of suggestions from many subscribers, as well as our own realization that HeinOnline has outgrown the current user interface due to both the content and diversity of the HeinOnline subscribers, we are pleased to announce that a new user interface for HeinOnline will soon be launched.  This new interface will incorporate many new features to better assist the researcher, and will also upgrade many of the existing components of HeinOnline.

In addition to the new user interface that will soon be launched, we are also going to subdivide the Law Journal Library collection into multiple library modules.  We believe that this will provide all of our subscribers with much greater flexibility; allowing them to subscribe to the entire Law Journal Library collection, or a smaller piece of the Law Journal Library collection that will best suit their overall research needs.  Of course, the greater flexibility will also extend to the pricing structure for HeinOnline, with subscribers being provided greater discounts based on the overall number of library modules for which they may choose to subscribe.

At this stage, current subscribers do not need to do anything to ensure access to all of the material currently included in the HeinOnline collections.  Upon your renewal subscription, we will ask you to choose which library modules will best suit the needs of the researchers at your organization.

It is our hope that this new interface, combined with greater flexibility to subscribe to the HeinOnline libraries that are of the greatest importance to you, will continue to reinforce our commitment to bring you a world-class legal research product.

Below, please find highlights of just some of the enhancements and upgrades that will be included with the new user interface.  As always, if you have any suggestions, comments, or questions about HeinOnline, simply send them to b_jablonski@wshein.com.

Search History.

This wonderful new feature will preserve ALL searches during a HeinOnline session for easy recall.  No longer will you need to remember all of the search terms you've used during your HeinOnline research; HeinOnline will do it for you.

In addition, the search terms that are saved by HeinOnline can be used across the various HeinOnline libraries.  Therefore, if you are doing research on environmental law, for example, you may wish to use the same search terms in both the Law Journal Library as well as the U.S. Federal Register Library.

Return to Results List.

This new enhancement will display your most recent HeinOnline search results, allow you to browse through your results using a "Previous" and "Next" feature, and will also allow you to return to the last result viewed after you have already done additional research within HeinOnline.

Improved "Citations on This Page" feature.

For the in-depth researcher, the "Citations on this page" feature is a tool to conduct broader research by providing a list of cites that are found on the current page being viewed.  In many instances, the cites listed are also "hot linked" so that a researcher can "jump" to another cite in the HeinOnline collection.  With the release of the new interface, the "Citations on this page" button will produce a greater number of results and links.

Always know where you are within HeinOnline.

Presently, users of the Law Journal Library are provided with the journal title, volume, and the page that they are visiting, but they do not see the name of the specific article.  Obviously, this can become rather confusing if you have multiple browser windows opened at the same time.  The new user interface will incorporate a volume header that will list the actual title of the article.  Here is an example of the enhancement:

1 Alta. L. Rev. 25 (1955-1961)
Symposium on the Land Titles Act, A

Federal Register "Day" Navigator.

As of today, users of the Federal Register Library need to know the specific volume and page number of the Federal Register page that they wish to view.  With the new interface, users will now be able to go directly to a page simply by knowing the day that the Federal Register page was published.  This added feature will provide more flexibility and should help improve your research efficiency.

Improved Journal Title List Navigation.

As mentioned above, HeinOnline's Law Journal Library now has more than 700 journals under contract.  With such a large list of titles, the new user interface will assist researchers in locating a journal faster by including title cross-references and also an alphabetical "letter navigation bar" so that a user can more quickly find a title in the Law Journal Library collection.

Improved Icons.

With the release of the new interface, users will notice standardized icons being used across all of the library collections in HeinOnline, icons that will appear both at the top AND bottom of a page, as well as icons to allow for page rotation (all those charts and graphs included in the libraries will be much easier to read!).

All of the above features have been designed to aid the researcher in locating the information they need more quickly and efficiently than ever before, all-the-while preserving the basic "user-friendly" approach that we've always attempted to follow with HeinOnline.

October 30, 2003

The following new titles and updates have just been included in HeinOnline.  This update represents more than 400,000 NEW fully-searchable page-images, and is rather unique in that this release includes the oldest academic American Law Review (American Law Journal), as well as the newest primary academic Review in the United States (Ave Maria Law Review).  Coverage within HeinOnline's Law Journal Library now spans the period 1808 through 2003!

As always, the free Cataloging Aid has been updated to reflect these new additions.  To use the free Cataloging Aid, simply visit http://washburnlaw.edu/heinonline/

We are also very pleased to announce that the HeinOnline Law Journal Library now contains nearly 400 journal titles, and there are more than 250 additional journals that have signed an agreement to become a part of the Law Journal Library in HeinOnline.

In addition, there are approximately 8.2 million pages available in HeinOnline, easily making HeinOnline the world's largest, image-based legal research collection.

Last, but definitely not least, throughout this year, HeinOnline subscribers have asked for more and more content to be added.  In January 2003, our goal was to deliver an additional 3 million pages to our subscribers during the calendar year, which would have been an increase of 250,000 pages from where we ended 2002.  As of December 2003, we will have delivered 4.1 million pages to the subscribers, an increase over the original 2003 goal of more than 33%.

More content, more libraries, and more flexibility are coming in 2004.  We look forward to continuing to bring you high-quality images of significant legal research material.  As always, we welcome your suggestions and comments.  Please feel free to send them to b_jablonski@wshein.com.

JUST ADDED TO HEINONLINE'S FEDERAL REGISTER COLLECTION…

Federal Register volumes 23-26 (1958-1961)

October 14, 2003

In our ongoing efforts to ensure that only authorized users are able to access HeinOnline, we are considering several options.  One of those options involves periodically changing the passwords for those of you who gain access to HeinOnline via a pre-assigned username and password that we provided at the time of your trial or initial subscription.

Many of you would not be affected if this option was implemented because you gain access via authenticated IP address(es) that you provided to us at the time of your trial or initial subscription.  However, if you currently access HeinOnline via a username/password that we provided to you, we would like your feedback before we decide to move forward with this option.

If we were to change your password periodically, which option would you prefer:

1)  Changing the password every 3 month

2)  Changing the password every 6 months

3)  Changing the password every 12 months

Obviously there are positives and negatives to changing the passwords frequently, but we feel it is very important to ask for your feedback as we look for ways to keep HeinOnline secure from unauthorized users.  Please feel free to send your comments to techsupport@wshein.com.

Thank you for your time and for your ongoing support of HeinOnline!

October 2, 2003

When we announced the latest release to HeinOnline's Law Journal Library Collection, we failed to highlight the fact that Wisconsin Law Review has been GREATLY expanded to include coverage from 1920-2002.

In many surveys of the top-rated academic legal periodicals, Wisconsin Law Review often ranks among the top-25 most-cited.  The addition of this review to HeinOnline further enhances the value and convenience HeinOnline delivers to legal researchers around the world.

As always, we welcome your suggestions for the legal periodicals you would like to see added to the HeinOnline Law Journal Library Collection.

Fast facts about the Law Journal Library collection:

There are now more than 600 journal titles included in or under contract to be included in HeinOnline.  All titles are comprehensive in scope and begin from the very first issue ever published (a feature you simply will not find in any other online legal periodical database).

There are now 117 "international journals" in the Law Journal Library collection.

All pages in HeinOnline are image-based, which means you are viewing the page as it originally appeared in print. All charts, graphs, and pictures are available, and the footnotes are where they belong!

If you are looking to save shelf space in your library, the current shelf-space savings that can be realized from the journals in HeinOnline is 1,700 linear feet (520 meters).  Many subscribers are now moving their hardcopy to off-site storage, discarding multiple copies of back issues, and also discontinuing their binding in many cases.  In other words, your subscription to HeinOnline provides flexibility for your library.

In related HeinOnline news...

The U.S. Federal Register Library collection now spans the period 1962-1980.  Each and every page of this timeframe is included, and by December 2003, full-coverage of the U.S. Federal Register from 1936 through 1980 will be available.  All HeinOnline subscribers presently have full access to the U.S. Federal Register Library collection.

Within the next few months, HeinOnline will have a mirrored site, offering faster delivery to all subscribers, and guaranteeing the reliability you've come to expect from HeinOnline.  In addition, major investments have recently been made in both hardware and software to enhance your HeinOnline experience.  We welcome your feedback.

For those of you that visited our exhibit booth at the American Association of Law Libraries annual meeting in Seattle recently, we sincerely thank you for spending some of your valuable time with us.  We hope that you had an opportunity to view the forthcoming U.S. Treaties and U.S. Reports Libraries that will soon be available to ALL HeinOnline subscribers at no additional charge during your current subscription period.  The U.S. Treaties Library will be the most comprehensive online treaty collection available today, and the U.S. Reports Library will be the only source for the official U.S. Reports in an image-based format from inception.

Finally, please remember that HeinOnline subscribers enjoy free access to the HeinOnline Cataloging Aid at http://washburnlaw.edu/HeinOnline/

There is also a "What's New" section of the Cataloging Aid, which can be found at http://washburnlaw.edu/HeinOnline/whatsnew.htm

Finally, since it has been some time since I last asked our subscribers, we'd like to hear about the ways in which you make Hein-On-Line known throughout your institution.  In the past, subscribers have told us that they forward the "update announcements" to the professors, lawyers, and students, while other subscribers have their own internal newsletters in which they make regular announcements about Hein-On-Line.  Here at the Hein company, we have created posters and sent them to our subscribers so they could be hung within the library to promote your subscription to Hein-On-Line, offered pens to subscribers that can be given out, etc.

Please tell us what you are doing to expose Hein-On-Line within your institution, or if you have some ideas for products that we could send to your library that would help expose Hein-On-Line throughout your institution.  We'll do our best to accommodate your requests.  Please send your thoughts to me at b_jablonski@wshein.com.

Hein-On-Line Subscribers...

After extensive research into the size of printable sections in Hein-On-Line, we are pleased to announce an enhancement to the PDF printing feature of Hein-On-Line.  Until now, any sections (which also includes all articles in Hein-On-Line) in excess of 30 pages needed to be printed in multiple PDF units.  For example, in order to generate and print a 45-page article in PDF format, you would print the first 30 pages as a unit, and then the last 15 pages as a unit.  This was necessary simply due to the size of the image-based articles in Hein-On-Line.  Overall, this worked well for the printing of most articles in Hein-On-Line.  In fact, more than 80% of the sections in Hein-On-Line are less than 30 pages in length.

However, we still weren't satisfied with the 30-page PDF printing function, so we once again set out to upgrade and enhance the PDF printing function.  Today, we are pleased to announce that all articles in Hein-On-Line that are 60 pages or less in length will be generated and printed as one PDF unit.  With this new upgrade, nearly 96% of all sections in Hein-On-Line may be printed as one PDF unit.

In addition, once a section that is greater than 60 pages has been requested to be printed (by ANY subscriber, not simply someone at your institution), the section will be cached.  By doing this, the printing speed will dramatically increase for future printings of that particular section.

These enhancements will improve your efficiency and productivity when printing sections from Hein-On-Line.

As always, you can print any size section in Hein-On-Line by using our freely downloadable browser helper application HPrint.  For more information on HPrint, PDF printing or any other Hein-On-Line feature visit http://heinonline.org/HeinDocs/HOLHelp.htm

If you have any questions about this newly enhanced feature or any other aspect of Hein-On-Line, please contact our Technical Support Staff at techsupport@wshein.com or 1-800-828-7571.

Also,  Hein-On-Line recently experienced explosive usage....from April through May, the number of hits to Hein-On-Line grew from 532,000 to nearly 1,000,000!!!  This growth is a true indicator of the value of Hein-On-Line to legal researchers in your library.  In fact, many of the hits are related to the “index” portions of Hein-On-Line.  This means that researchers are using Hein-On-Line more and more as a searching tool to locate relevant, historical articles for their research needs, something that was simply not possible prior to Hein-On-Line.  In order to give you some idea of the real usage of the “index” portions of Hein-On-Line, from January 2002 through May 2002, there were 2,825,000 “hits” to the index portions of Hein-On-Line.

Next, we would like to welcome all new subscribers to Hein-On-Line.  In the past year alone, the Hein-On-Line community of subscribers has more than doubled.  We sincerely appreciate your ongoing support of Hein-On-Line, and hope you will provide us with all of your feedback.

Finally, since this may be the last announcement to this list-serv prior to the American Association of Law Libraries meeting in Orlando later this month, we would like to welcome all of you who will be attending AALL to stop by our exhibit booth (booth #303) to see a demonstration of the next addition to Hein-On-Line....the Federal Register.  We will be including all pre-1980 coverage of the Federal Register in coming months in an image-based, fully searchable format.

In other Hein-On-Line news...Usage Statistics Coming Soon!

We are feverishly working to develop the ability to provide usage statistics to our subscribers. We are getting closer every day, and should be able to provide this information within the next few months. For now, we would like to know what you would like to see in your usage report? Do you simply want to know the total number of "hits" from your institution/organization, or the most popular journal, issue, or article that is being sought?  We need your feedback!  Please e-mail Brian Jablonski (b_jablonski@wshein.com) and we can start to tailor the usage reports to your needs.

Adding ISSN's to the titles in Hein-On-Line...

We've been asked in recent months by a couple of our subscribers if we could include ISSN numbers in Hein-On-Line. So, before we simply include the ISSN numbers where we feel they belong, we're asking for your thoughts. Where should they appear in Hein-On-Line? Perhaps on the page that lists the titles and coverage periods? Maybe it would be better to include the ISSN number in the Navigation Toolbar next to the title? Again, we'd like your feedback. Please e-mail Brian Jablonski, b_jablonski@wshein.com, and let us know where you would like to see the ISSN numbers. Don't forget, though, that if you have access to OCLC, you can find the ISSN number by referring to the OCLC control number (found in the Hein-On-Line Cataloging Aid).

On behalf of all of us at William S. Hein & Co., Inc., we sincerely appreciate the support of the more than 285 current subscribers to Hein-On-Line!  Your feedback is welcome at any time.

January 18, 2002

After months of hard work and consultations with many Hein-On-Line subscribers, we are pleased to announce an upgrade to Hein-On-Line that will be released in just a matter of days!

While this upgrade will incorporate a new look for Hein-On-Line (primarily to provide a larger viewing area of the page images), the more significant components of this upgrade will involve enhanced searching features, improved PDF printing, additional text at the bottom of a printed page, a "Citations on this page" button, as well as a new "Help Index".

Hein-On-Line researchers will now be able to conduct both word and phrase searching. With word searching, users will have the ability to search for a single word, or by entering multiple words, users will be able to conduct a word search to match all search terms requested. Phrase searching will be done by simply enclosing the phrase in quotation marks.

Improved PDF printing will mean slightly faster printing of pages from Hein-On-Line as well as additional text at the bottom of the printed page to better aid the researcher.  When a page being viewed contains a cite to another page that is already included in Hein-On-Line, the "Citations on this page" button, which will be located in the Volume Navigation Panel, will provide the user with a hot link to the cited page.  The "Help Index" will provide the user with a number of answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Hein-On-Line.

All in all, we hope you will enjoy these upgrades, and as always, we look forward to your feedback!

Finally, Jim Mumm at Marquette brought this important point to our attention recently: "Apparently Adobe Acrobat 4.0 has some problems with printing certain pdf files, but this has been fixed by a newer version of Acrobat. We downloaded version 4.05c, and that seems to have resolved the slow printing." Special thanks to Jim!!! You can visit the Adobe web site at www.adobe.com to download the most current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Last fall, we asked subscribers what we could provide to help them spread the word about Hein-On-Line in their library. We implemented several of the suggestions, but thought we would ask again for your feedback. Some ideas include: book dummies to place on your shelves next to the journals that are included in Hein-On-Line, or perhaps stickers that could be placed on your bound journal volumes that would advise people that the volume is also included in Hein-On-Line. Let us know what we can do to help you spread the word!

We have completely remodeled the front pages of Hein-On-Line, bringing you more information about Hein-On-Line to help you and your staff become familiar with the features and benefits of this revolutionary new product for your library and its patrons.

There's a "What's New " page, which gives you a list of recently added material, an updated list of titles that are currently available or are in production to be included in the near future, as well as an online "How-to" guide to help you use Hein-On-Line. We have also included a "Frequently Asked Questions" page, and hope you'll provide us with some of your questions that we can post on this page (along with the answers, of course!).

A fantastic new FREE feature is our "Cataloging Aid" to help you link your cataloging records to the journals included in Hein-On-Line. Just think of the time-savings of this feature!

Finally, don't forget about the "Microform Conversion Program" that can save you tremendous shelf space and money!

February 2001
We are very pleased to announce that one of the forthcoming titles to the Hein-On-Line collection will be the original Green Bag! The original Green Bag was published from 1899-1914, and included material from scholars, practitioners, judges, and other public servants, including such famous people as Louis Brandeis, Roscoe Pound, and Elihu Root, to name just a few. The Green Bag covered a wide range of legal material, including discussions of federal, state, and municipal law, legal history, biographies of interesting judges and other heroes of the law. It also included law-related anecdotes and verse. It was, in essence, a journal that appealed to those who valued useful and engaging reading on the legal issues of the day.

We are currently in the process of producing an acid-free reprint of the original Green Bag as well, and are offering a special discounted price for the reprint edition to all Hein-On-Line subscribers. Here is the special offer:
The reprint edition will be priced as follows:
The complete set, volumes 1-26, plus index volume 27...........$2495.00
Per volume, volumes 1-26.....................................................$110.00
Per volume, Volume 27 (index volume)..........................................$85.00
SPECIAL SET PRICE FOR HEIN-ON-LINE SUBSCRIBERS...........$1995.00

January 10, 2001
Georgetown Law Journal, Volumes 15-49
Michigan Law Review, Volumes 24-58
This material adds nearly 70,000 more pages to the Hein-On-Line collection!

Important Reminders...
1)  Rather than searching across the entire Hein-On-Line collection, you can narrow your search to just one journal title.  This enhancement was just recently added, and is great for someone doing research on a particular journal of interest.
2)  As a Hein-On-Line subscriber, your library is entitled to a 50% discount off the catalog price of all microfiche copies of the journals included in Hein-On-Line.   This is a great opportunity to remove multiple paper copies and "free up" much-needed shelf space (after all, every 1 million pages added to Hein-On-Line provides the potential for your library to save 250 linear feet of shelf space).  Or, if space savings isn't a concern, we also offer discounts off the purchase of paper issues that may have been lost, stolen, or simply worn out.

Searching by Journal Title...
It is now possible to limit text searching to a single journal title.  Simply use the new journal pull-down which has been added to the 'Text Search' dialog screen to select the title you want or  'All Titles', which is the default.  Since Hein-On-Line is nearing one million pages and will eclipse 3.5 million pages by the end of 2001, this added feature will greatly enhance your researching capability.

Here are some helpful hints to consider when using Hein-On-Line:
Downloading/Printing...
Because Hein-On-Line provides you with an exact image of the originally-published page and/or article, the individual pages in Hein-On-Line are saved as image files.  Since image files are larger than text files, pages and articles will take a little longer to fully "download" into your browser before they can be printed.  Of course, the number of pages you are requesting, your current internet connection speed, and other technical factors will also play a significant role in how quickly a page or article will "download" into your browser.  As a result of these varying factors, there is no "hard and fast" rule to follow for how quickly a page or article will "download".  However, keeping an eye on your browser status bar will help in determining when the document has been fully downloaded.   The browser status bar at the bottom of your browser window will inform you of how many total pages are being downloaded and how many have already been downloaded.  When the document is done downloading, a 'Document Done' message will appear in the browser status bar.   It is important to wait for the 'Document Done' message before you use your browser's print feature to actually print the document.  Otherwise, the pages you are requesting may not print in their entirety.  Again, because the pages you are printing are images as opposed to text, the printing will take longer since there is more data being sent to the printer.

Searching...
While doing an article title search in Hein-On-Line, do not enter insignificant words such as 'A', 'An' or 'The' when searching by article title. Simply enter the key words of the article you are searching, and not only will your article appear (provided it is currently included in Hein-On-Line), but additional articles of interest may appear that will enhance your research!

A Word About Un-Corrected OCR Text...
It is important to realize that the text included in Hein-On-Line is un-corrected OCR text.  What this means is that behind each page image is a page of text which was created from the image page using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software.  While the page image provides you with an exact facsimile of the original, the un-corrected OCR text allows us to provide a reasonable way to full-text search the entire Hein-On-Line collection, just one journal title in the collection, or just one volume in the collection.  This makes full-text searching of the body of material included in Hein-On-Line available for the very first time!  The full-text can also be cut and pasted from Hein-On-Line into Wordprocessing and other programs to aid in your research.  To view the OCR text, simply open any page in the Hein-On-Line collection, and then click the "A" button in the top Volume Navigation Toolbar.

Based on suggestions from subscribers and user's of Hein-On-Line, we are proud to announce an important enhancement to this valuable legal research product.  Substantial improvements have been made that dramatically increase the quality of the print function of Hein-On-Line.  Now, the quality of a printed page closely resembles the quality of the originally published document.  We encourage all subscribers to try out this latest enhancement and provide your feedback.  We also welcome any other feedback about Hein-On-Line as we strive to make this the most important secondary legal research product in your library.

Many additional enhancements are already in the works for Hein-On-Line.  Here are just two of the forthcoming enhancements:
1)  Expanded text searching to include "phrase searching" and "proximity searching".  Proximity searching will allow for text searches within the same sentence, paragraph, or within a string of words.
