THE BASICS OF USING HEIN-ON-LINE

Although Hein-On-Line contains a multitude of legal research collections, one of the primary realizations for the success of the project was that it must be easy to use and provide the legal researcher with the most accurate information based on their needs. The collections within Hein-On-Line can be accessed in two primary methods -- browsing and searching.

Browsing
If you wish to Browse Hein-On-Line, you may do so in several ways, all uniquely suited to the desires of the legal researcher...

Browse by Journal Title.  Browsing by Journal Title provides a complete, alphabetical list of the titles available in Hein-On-Line. This feature also provides an overview of the coverage periods of each title. By selecting a title from this location, the researcher is then directed to the complete collection within the title selected.

Browse by Author.  Browsing by Author provides a list from A to Z by author last name, along with the title and official citation.  A legal researcher may find this feature beneficial when they are unsure of the exact spelling of a particular author's last name.  Selecting this method of browsing will yield all authors in the entire Hein-On-Line collection whose last names begin with the letter requested.

Browse by Article Title.  Similar to browse by Author, browsing by article title provides an alphabetical list of article titles within the Hein-On-Line collection, along with the author of the article and the official citation.  This can be a valuable feature when only the beginning of a title is known, but not the complete title of a work.  Helpful Hint: The articles A, An, and The are not considered when browsing by Title.

Searching
The structure of Hein-On-Line provides a very efficient method of locating information within the entire Hein-On-Line collection. The researcher may perform full-text searches, more narrowly-defined searches such as by official citation, author, and title, or searches within only one journal title.

Author/Title Search.  Enter key words that you wish to search (either author name and/or key words of a title) and Hein-On-Line will provide a complete list of all articles containing the name(s) or term(s) entered.  Utilizing the Boolean operators AND and OR can help narrow your search.

Full-Text Search.  Every word of every page in Hein-On-Line is accessible by using the full-text search feature. Simply enter your search terms and Hein-On-Line will provide a complete list of all pages where your search term(s) appear.  Please note: There is no need to use parentheses around search terms, full author names/titles, and search terms are not case-sensitive.

Singular and Plural Forms of Words.  Searching for the singular or plural form of a word is easy with Hein-On-Line by simply entering the word or a portion of the word.  For example, when researching articles that contain Juries or Jury, enter the letters JUR and the search results will provide all articles containing these letters.

Searching by Official Citation.
For the legal researcher who has an official citation to a particular article, Hein-On-Line offers a unique, efficient searching technique. By entering the volume number, selecting the journal from the menu pull-down, and entering a page number, the researcher will quickly locate the exact page within the collection.  Please note:  Currently, this search feature follows Bluebook rule 16.3 (17th ed., page 119) for consecutively paginated journals.  In the event your cite is to a non-consecutively paginated journal, it is best to use the Author/Title search feature of Hein-On-Line.

The Navigation Toolbar
The Navigation Toolbar remains at the top of the screen while a researcher is in a particular volume, allowing them a number of options.  At all times, a  researcher will know where they are within Hein-On-Line. The title of the journal, volume number, year, and page number are listed, and a number of options are available to navigate throughout a journal. The page number pull down menu can be used to go directly to a particular page number within the volume, or the following features can be utilized for navigation...

The i button provides a complete electronic table of contents to the volume chosen by the researcher, along with links to jump throughout the volume.  The Section arrows allow the researcher to go directly from one section to the next within a volume. Because Hein-On-Line includes everything contained within each and every issue of a journal including items such as biographies, book reviews, and other originally published information, the term Section is used rather than Articles.

The Page arrows allow the researcher to scroll through a volume, one page at a time, forward and backward throughout the volume.

The Format buttons allow the researcher to view either the image of the page as it existed in hardcopy, or the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) text of the page.

The Size buttons allow the researcher to increase or decrease the size of the image page they are viewing. This feature is helpful when the original text is rather small.

The Search Volume Text Box allows a researcher to search the words and phrases of the OCR'd text of the volume.

Printing and E-Mailing
Another benefit of Hein-On-Line is the ability to print a page or article or e-mail the page or file to someone. This feature does not require any additional software to be installed. In order to print, simply click Page or Section, and follow your standard printing procedures. To e-mail, click Page or Section, click File, then click Send, followed by Page by E-Mail.

Please note: The researcher agrees that the printing of a page or article is to be used for personal, non-commercial, research purposes only. Any other use may be in violation of the copyright laws of the United States or other country(ies). Please refer to the Terms of Use in the licensing agreement for
