handle is hein.ustreaties/imintoom0001 and id is 1 raw text is: IMMIGRATION INTO THE UNITED STATES
FROM
1782 to 1890.
GENERAL REVIEW.
At this time much more than ordinary interest is manifested in the
subject of foreign immigration to this country, and all facts and figures
in relation to the large and increasing arrivals of immigrants from foreign
countries in the United States receive the marked attention of the
public.
Carefully prepared statements are herewith given, which show the
arrivals of alien passengers andimmigrants in the United States during
each year from 1820 to 1890, inclusive; also the most complete infor-
mation afforded by the records in regard to the nationality, sex, age, and
occupation of the aliens and immigrants arrived.
No official records were made of the influx of foreign population to
this country prior to 1820.
Although the number of immigrants arrived in the United States
from the close of the Revolutionary war up to 1820 is not accurately
known, it is estimated by good authorities at 250,000.
Prior to 1856 the official statistics of arrivals of passengers from for.
eign countries indicate the arrivals of alien passengers oply, without
distinguishing those intending to make their permanent residence in
this country from merely transient passengers or sojourners. From
1856 to 1868 the statistics distinguish the total number of immigrants
only from the transient passengers, but since 1868 the number of immi-
grants of each nationality is shown separately from sojourners.
