                                                        &4 1977
Application of

UNITED AIR LINES, INC. Docket 31046

  for an exemption pursuant to
section 416(b) of the Federal
Aviation Act of 1958, as amended.

                            ORDER GRANTING EXEMPTION

On June 24, 1977, United Air Lines filed an application, pursuant to
section 416(b) of the Act, for an exemption from condition (7) of its
certificate for Route 1 so as to permit the carrier to provide one daily
round-trip flight between Los Angeles, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada,
terminating at Grand Junction, Colorado. 1/ The carrier requests that
the authority be effective on September 7, 1977, 2/ for a period of two
years or until 90 days after final decision in its route realignment
certificate application in Docket 28755.

In support of its application, United states that eastbound Flight
726, which operates between Los Angeles and Denver via Las Vegas and
Grand Junction, currently provides Grand Junction passengers with a
timely opportunity for making connections at Denver to eastbound flights;
however, with schedule changes effective September 7, there will be in-
sufficient time for making such connections, so that the Grand Junction-
Denver portion of the flight will serve no useful function; a new Flight
368 will operate between Grand Junction and Denver at a time more suitable
for eastbound connections; westbound United proposes a similar substitution
with Flights 265 (old flight) and 361 (new flight); the termination of
Flight 726 at Grand Junction and the origination of Flight 265 at Grand
Junction would satisfy the intent of restriction (7), whose purpose is
to preclude turnaround service between Los.Angeles and Las Vegas; and

l/ Condition (7) of United's certificate requires flights serving both
Los Angeles and Las Vegas to originate or terminate at Denver or a point
east.
2/ United states that grant of its application by August 8, 1977, will
permit it to efficiently implement the proposed service.
