FILTRATION OF WATER FOR OAPITOL BUILDING.

LETTER FROM THE ARCHITECT OF TE UNITED STATES CAPITOL,
TRANSMITTING A STATEMENT AS TO THE FILTRATION OF
WATER USED IN THE CAPITOL BUILDING, IN OBEDIENCE TO A
PROVISION IN THE ACT MAKING APPROPRIATIONS TO SUPPLY
DEFICIENCIES IN THE APPROPRIATIONS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR
   ENDING TUNE 30, 1896, ETC.

Dcamnan 7, 1896.-Referred to the Committee on Appropriations and ordered to be
                             printed.

             ARCHITECT'S OFFICE UNITED STATES CAPITOL,
                              Washington, D. 0., December 5, 1896.
Sim: In obedience to a provision in the Act making appropriations
to supply deficiencies in the appropriations for the fiscal year ending
June 30, 1896, etc., which directs the Architect of the Capitol to
examine into the methods for the filtration of water used in the Capitol
building and report to Congress on the first day of the next session
the result of his investigations, what propositions have been made to
furnish such filtration, and the probable cost thereof I have the honor
to report that the water service as supplied to the Capitol comes from
the city mains in an unfiltered condition.
Proposals have been received from the Morison-Jewell Filtration
Company, New York, to furnish filtration plants for both wings of the
Capitol, the one for the House wing at a cost of $11,050, that for the
Senate wing at $10,900, with a guaranty that the capacity of the filters
shall be to deliver to each wing not less than 300,000 gallons of bright,
pure water, practically free from suspended matter, per day of twenty-
 four hours.
These are estimated to be of sufficient capacity to filter all the water
ssed in the respective wings.
This company has also submitted proposals for the filtering of the
water used for drinking purposes and for the bathing rooms only, at a
cost of $3,500 for each wing, giving a capacity of 5,000 gallons an hour
 of bright, clear water.
The manufacturers state that the cost of chemicals for renewing filter-
ing material will not exceed 50 cents per day.
      Very respectfully,
                                          EDWARD CLARK,
                                  Architect United States Capitol.
The SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
