            The VICE-PRESIDENT   presented the following
LETTER   FROM   THE  SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR, TRANSMIT-
  TING  A REPORT   PROM  THE   COMMISSIONER OF THE GENERAL
  LAND   OFFICE  IN RESPONSE TO SENATE RESOLUTION DATED
  JANUARY 14, 1896, CALLING FOR CERTAIN INFORMATION
  RELATIVE   TO THE  LANDS   CONSTITUTING THE BEDS OF CROSS
  LAKE,  SODA   LAKE,  CLEAR   LAKE,  PERRY   LAKE,  AND   CADDO
  LAKE,  EXTENDING   FROM   THE  TEXAS   STATE  LINE  TO OR NEAR
  THE  CITY  OF SHREVEPORT, LA.


                            DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIORY
                                     Washington, February 3, 1896.
  SIR:  I have the honor to hand you herewith a report from the Com-
missioner of the General Land Office, dated the 30th ultimo, upon Sen-
ate resolution dated January 14, 1896, calling for certain information
relative to the lands constituting the beds of Cross Lake, Soda Lake,
Clear Lake, Ferry Lake, and  Caddo Lake, extending  from the Texas
State line to or near the city of Shreveport, La.
  The  report of the Commissioner, specifically and in detail, furnishes
the information in the order asked.
  Accompanying   said report there is transmitted a complete set of the
plats of the townships in which the lakes are situated.

                          DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,
                                      GENERAL   LAND   OFFICE,
                              Washington, D. C., January 30, 1896.
  SIR: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt, by reference from
the Department,  for report of Senate resolution dated January  14,
1896, which resolution reads as follows:
  Resolved, That the Secretary of the Interior be, and he is hereby, directed to inform
the Senate whether the lands constituting the beds of Cross Lake, Soda Lake, Clear
Lake, Ferry Lake, and Caddo Lake, extending from the Texas State line to or near
the city of Shreveport, La., are claimed by the Department as the property of the
United States, and to this end to cause to be examined the character of said lands,
and make inquiry in regard to said lakes, with the view of determining whether
the area covered by them was land conveyed, or intended to be conveyed, in the
opinion of the Department, to the State of Louisiana, under the terms of the swamp
land acts of 1849 and 1850.
  Resolved further, That the area embraced in the beds of said lakes be approxi-
mately stated in acres for each lake; also what part, if any, of the beds of said
lakes is embraced within the public surveys of the United States, and the extent of
the area of said lakes not included in any public survey.
  Resolved further, That the Senate be informed whether or not the beds of said
lakes, or any parts thereof, are claimed by the State of Louisiana, the Caddo Parish
levee board, or by private parties; and if so, under color of what authority, claim,
conveyance, or title; also whether any parts of the beds of said lakes have been
entered upou, inclo:ed, or otherwise taken possession of.
