ir. CARTER, from the Committee on the Census, submitted the following
REPOET
[To accompany S. 94.]
In line 5, section 2, strike out the word six and insert in lieu thereof
the word five.
Amend by striking out all of section 3 and in lieu thereof insert the
following:
Suc. 3. That the chief clerk, disbursing clerk, and the chief statisticians pro-
vided for in the preceding section, and all other employees authorized by this act
below the assistant director of the census shall be appointed according to the dis-
cretion of the director of the census, subject to such examination as said director
may, with the approval of the Secretary of the Interior, prescribe. and noo otherwise.
In line 6, section 6, strike out the words in December, eighteen
hundred and ninety-seven, and in lieu thereof insert the following, to
wit, as soon after his appointment as )racticable.
As zhus amended, the committee recommend that the bill do pass.
