                       LETTER

                            13GM

THE ACTING SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY,
                         RELATIVE TO
DEFICIENCY IN APPROPRIATION FOR HEATING, HOISTING, AND
VENTILATING APPARATUS, AND REPAIRS TO SAME, FOR ALL
  GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS, INCLUDING MARINE HOSPITALS
AND QUARANTINE STATIONS UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE
  TREASURY DEPARTMENT.

JuNE 3, 1897.-Referred to the Committee on Appropriations and ordered to be
                           printed.

                      TREASURY DEPARTMENT,
                           OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY,
                               Washington, D. G., June 2, 1897.
SIR: By act approved June 11, 1896, Congress made an appropria-
tion of $100,000 for heating, hoisting, and ventilating apparatus, and
repairs-to same, for all public buildings, including marine hospitals and
quarantine stations under the control of the Treasury Department. I
have the honor to advise you that necessary expenditures have been
authorized to date aggregating in amount $99,857.18, leaving a balance
to the credit of said appropriation of $142.82, and in view of its depleted
condition I have to request that the sum of $1,500 be included in the
deficiency bill now before the Senate, making appropriations to supply
deficiencies in the appropriations for the fiscal year ending June 30,
1897, and for prior years, and for other purposes, to meet such exigen-
cies in the service as may arise during the balance of the current fiscal
year requiring expenditures in the various completed public buildings
under the control of this Department.
      Respectfully, yours, 0. L. SPAULDING,
                                           Acting Secretary.
  The PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE.
                             0
      S. Do 6--1
