     EXAMINATION   OF SAUGERTIES  HARBOR,  NEW  YORK.

  SIR: I have the honor to transmit herewith a letter from the Chief
of Engineers, United States Army, dated October 10, 1899 together
with copy of a report from Col. J. W. Barlow, Corps of Engineers,
dated June 24, 1899, upon the examination and survey of Saugerties
Harbor, New York, made by him in compliance with the provisions
of the river and harbor act of March 3, 1899.

                                Wfashington, October 10, 1899.
  SmR: The river and harbor act of March 3, 1899 provides for an
examination and survey of Saugerties Harbor, New iork, with a view
of extending the improvement from the westerly end of the south dike
westerly to the Point of Rocks; also with a view to removing the
loose rock from the channel and continuing the depth of 12 feet at low
water toward the head of the harbor.
  The duty of making the examination provided for by the act was
assigned to the charge of Col. J. W. Barlow, Corps of Engineers, and
I have now the honor to submit the accompanying copy of his report,
dated June 24, 1899, which contains a plan with map and estimate of
cost of improvement called for.
