                          TRANSMITTING
A COPY  OF A COMMUNICATION FROM THE SECRETARY OF STATE
  SUBMITTING   AN  ESTIMATE   OF APPROPRIATION FOR INTER-
  PRETERS  IN KOREA.

                                  Washington, January 8, 1903.
  SR: I have the honor to transmit herewith, for the consideration of
Congress, a copy of a communication from the Secretary of State, of
the 7th instant, submitting an estimate of appropriation for inclusion
in the diplomatic and consular appropriation bill to rovide for two
student interpreters in Korea at an annual salary at $1,000 each, and
for payment of the cost of tuition of two student interpreters in Korea
at $100 each per annum, $200; in all, $2,200.

                                  Washington, January 7,1903.
  SIR: I have the honor to request that you will submit for the con-
sideration of the Committee on Appropriations of the House of Repre-
sentatives, with a view to its incorporation into the diplomatic and
consular appropriation bill for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1904,
the following estimate for two student interpreters at the legation at
Korea:
  For two student interpreters in Korea, who shall be citizens of the United States
and whose duty it shall be to study the Korean language, with A view to supplying
       H D-57-2-Vol  79-1
